Fic, links and stats

[personal profile] seldear posted this link A study of LJ friending and friendships - David Fono . An interesting read, although it really doesn't say much that I hadn't already observed myself. But he did a study, with a methodology and everything, so now it's official :)

But I found this quote interesting - "Robert Putnam expresses the popular academic viewpoint that online relationships are inherently dysfunctional by default, because they do not actually permit the formation of rich social capital."

Personally, I don't consider my lj 'friendships' any more dysfunctional than my real life friendships. And, just like RL, I have different levels and types of 'friendship' with different people in my flist. Some on my flist are acquantainces, some are better friends, depending on the degree of interaction.

Anyway, enough of that. As well as spending some quality time bonding with the internet now I have my BB to myself, I've also finished the rough draft of the 'SG-1 watches Serenity' fic. It still has a way to go before I'd send it off to be beta'd, but I was wondering -anyone want to volunteer? Ideally, I'd be looking for advice on the characterisation and dialogue primarily, but also on the concept itself, since this is basically a ten-page fic of not very much substance. Pretty much an exercise in seeing whether I could write their voices, with hopefully a little bit of humour thrown in. And I really need someone who will tell me if it sucks - this is the first time I've tried anything remotely like this *is nervous*. Oh, and knowledge of Firefly/Serenity is not necessary, although would be nice. So, after that demanding list of requirements, are there any takers?

In other news, according to my completely reliable survey, the most popular Winchester in SPN is... the Metallicar, with 43% of the vote! Closely followed by Sam and Dean, tied with 29% each. (These figures brought to you by the Department of Rounding and Statistical Abuse.)

Today's random fact - I finally found out what GIP means. It's been bugging me for ages...

I loved Firefly and Serenity- don't write them, but certainly have seen them all. I'd be happy to read it (though not this week- I'm only taking a five minute LJ break today).

Seriously? Wow - I'd be honoured :)

And next week is fine - just let me know when you can do it, chances are I'll probably be fooling around with it until then anyway.

About LJ friendships - totally agree - it completely varies, just like real life. I'm not sure what he counts as 'rich social capital' in that sense, but I find it fun and interesting to communicate easily with people from all over the world, and squee or moan on about things that we're both interested in (and RL friends usually aren't!). And some online friendships can turn into RL friendships that last years - I belong to a group of friends who have a shared website message board - we 'met' as regulars on a message board about some TV show about 6 years ago and 'clicked', began to exchange emails, and then got our own website board for just us to communicate on. We've all met each other loads of times now and I count them all as close friends. Other people on LJ etc you might have a few friendly conversations with and that's it - that's just like real life too :-D

Oh, forgot to say - would be very willing to beta your fic, but sadly know little about Stargate - am very good on Firefly/Serenity though if you need any Firefly fic beta'd in the future :-)

[identity profile] lyore.livejournal.com 2006-06-15 11:03 am (UTC)(link)
Well, this one is very Stargate-centric, but next time I write a Firefly fic I'll give you a yell. Thanks.

(And I love Zoe's dress in that scene...)

[identity profile] quiet-snowfall.livejournal.com 2006-06-15 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, she looks lovely in that scene doesn't she :-)

[identity profile] lyore.livejournal.com 2006-06-15 11:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, exactly. LJ and fandom friends are great for the things your RL friends just don't quite get.

Wow, sounds (reads?) like a grad student desperately needed an anthro thesis. ;) It is the solemn duty of every social sciences scholar to liberally spread as much quasi technical babble into their papers as possible. *nodnod*

Good luck on your fic! I believe that both SG and Serenity have...um, spaceships, right?

And GIP? Glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide?

[identity profile] lyore.livejournal.com 2006-06-15 11:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, they both have spaceships. Full marks!

... I have no idea what Glucose-dependant insulinotropic peptide (apart from some peptide which likes insulin and depends on sugar ^_^) but I was told GIP was Gratuitous Icon Post. Which makes a bit more sense in this context :)

[identity profile] necromage.livejournal.com 2006-06-15 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
I'm always available, you know that :)

[identity profile] lyore.livejournal.com 2006-06-15 11:08 am (UTC)(link)
I wasn't sure if you felt like reading SG-1 fic, since you don't really watch the show that much anymore. Have you finished your exam?

[identity profile] necromage.livejournal.com 2006-06-15 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, had the exam on Wednesday :) Now I'm just trying to over this cold I caught the day before the exam 7_7

[identity profile] lotusflower85.livejournal.com 2006-06-15 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
I'll be happy to take a look at it, if you need another person. I've only seen Serenity once, but i'm pretty well versed in my SG-1.

[identity profile] lyore.livejournal.com 2006-06-15 11:13 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks, that'd be great. It's very Stargate-centric, and quite a lot of the firefly stuff is poking (gentle) fun at the fans more than the movie itself.
