I am a bad, bad fangirl. For a variety of reasons, I hadn't had a chance to watch the last few episodes of Supernatural - work, limited internet, limited time, all that jazz.

But now I have.

And all I have to say is... )

[Poll #1274024]

I've noticed I tend to refer to the boys in a specific order, and I'm curious if anyone else does the same.

GAH. Been trying to write a post about recurring female characters and recurring male characters in SPN all night, and every time I try it ends up longer than War and Peace and impossible to put in any kind of coherent order.

It all boils down to the fact that, all other things being equal, as an audience we expect the young, hot, FEMALE recurring character to have been introduced primarily as a love interest for one of the male characters. But, as an audience, we expect the young, hot, MALE recurring character to have been introduced primarily for plot reasons, and further that it is extremely unlikely that the main purpose of said male character is to be a love interest for one of the male leads.

And this is the short (non-spoilery, non-SPN specific) version.... )

(And all that said, I have seen some truly vile reactions to female characters that I DO believe are rooted in misogyny. All I ask is that people accept this isn't always the case - that sometimes people have valid reasons for their reactions, even if you don't agree.)

I was thinking about Star Wars AUs tonight, specifically those where Luke is raised by Vader. It occurred to me that, in this situation, I could see a lot of similarities in parenting style between Vader and John Winchester (apart from the Vader-being-evil thing, of course). No, hear me out.

Both are characters whose defining moment is the loss of their wife. This loss is the single most powerful driving force - no pun intended - in their lives. Both are devoted to destroying those who have hurt their family. Both have little tolerance of physical weakness. Neither encourage disagreement. Both appear isolated from 'normal' society. Both tend to be rather black-and-white in their views, especially of good & evil. John clearly impressed his moral universe - demons bad, humans good - on his children early. Vader tried to do the same, the first time he was face to face with Luke. Both want their children to carry on in their footsteps. And, arguably, both think they are acting for the greater good.

Before I get slaughtered by the John Winchester fen, let me be clear that I am not equating John with Vader, nor do I think he was an OMGEVOL!parent. I just think that, in this situation, parent!Vader could be a little like parent!John, amped up to the max.

OK, I'm extrapolating a bit here, and some of these points are debatable depending on your view of the characters, but still. Not a complete stretch?

And now I really, really need to go to bed. Stupid Olympics.

It would be nice if I could stand up for more than 10 minutes without feeling like I'm going to pass out. On the other hand, all this time off work has given me plenty of time to catch up with the latest fandom kerfuffles. Wow.

To make myself feel even slightly productive, I have a rec:

Out for Blood by [personal profile] superbadgirl
Supernatural/NCIS crossover. Long and plotty gen (38,000 words), with the added bonus of Dean and Tony whumping. Yummy.

OK, so remember how a couple of weeks ago, there was that drabble meme? And how I wrote most of them on the weekend I did it, but lack of Quality LJ time prevented me from posting? Well, here's the first lot. Better late than never, I suppose. (In my defence, life has been hectic, yadda yadda yadda... never changes. *sigh*)

I've been tagged a couple of times with the 'random things' meme. Unfortunately, since I am currently failing to think of interesting or indeed random things about myself, I figured we'd play 'random recs' instead.

No posts for months and now twice in a night? Yep, you can tell I'm procrastinating, but this was too good not to share. From the brilliant Neil Gaiman:
(quoted wholesale)

"I know that David Tennant's Hamlet isn't till July. And lots of people are going to be doing Dr Who in Hamlet jokes, so this is just me getting it out of the way early, to avoid the rush...

"To be, or not to be, that is the question. Weeelll.... More of A question really. Not THE question. Because, well, I mean, there are billions and billions of questions out there, and well, when I say billions, I mean, when you add in the answers, not just the questions, weeelll, you're looking at numbers that are positively astronomical and... for that matter the other question is what you lot are doing on this planet in the first place, and er, did anyone try just pushing this little red button?"

(/quote)

I love Neil Gaiman. It makes me regret never being able to get past my mental block on comics, otherwise I would rush out and buy everything he'd ever written, ever.

(P.S Just watched Supernatural finale. GUH. Just... GUH. They expect me to wait 3 months until the next season? But then, given that this show has had longer mid-season hiatuses (hiatusi?), I guess I shouldn't be complaining too much.)

I think the lifts at work are haunted. They are always about 5 degrees* colder than the rest of the building, will randomly bump and shudder, and the screen that displays the floor number will flicker on and off.

Definitely haunted. I'm expecting Sam and Dean to show up and save the day any time now.

*that's Celsius, btw.
lyore: (Default)
OMG, Supernatural is on right now. Sam and Dean are speaking French! And with funny voices... Wow. It's so weird.

Dean is speaking French.
lyore: (Default)
I see the Supernatural fandom has exploded again. *sigh* I must say, sitting back and watching this from a distance, this makes me feel old. Young whippersnappers at it again...

I think every fandom I've seen the early stages of has followed the exact same pattern. The First Season Honeymoon is over, and the Second-Season blues have set in. Suddenly the fandom isn't shiny and new anymore, and people have spent enough virtual time together to realise they are all people and therefore capable of being just as cliche-y and bitchy as those popular girls you secretly hated in high school. The show runners are taking things in a different direction to the way you've spent the season break contemplating, and you're all secretly worried those new characters are just Mary Sues in a cunning disguise, waiting for a chance to take over the show...

I wonder how well Torchwood will cope, when it gets to their second season?

And I wonder when I got so cynical about fandom as a whole?

For the Firefly and Dr Who fen on my flist, anyone who hasn't done so should check out [personal profile] honorh's fic Out of Joint. The TARDIS crash-lands on the Serenity... Yeah, it's a crossover, but the characters from both shows have been nailed, and neither group has been subordinated to the other. Great interaction between the characters, and the start of what looks like a promising plot.

In other news, I'm really starting to get nervous about my trip. I just woke up this morning and it hit me. I think it's the idea of going somewhere where people speak a different language that is freaking me out the most. I get nervous-excited butterflies just thinking about it.

France

Jan. 21st, 2007 03:15 pm
lyore: (Default)
Yep folks, it's official. I'm going to France. And also to the UK, and possibly to Italy, depending on what we decide to do. At the moment looks like being 20 days in France, primarily based in Paris and Northern France (cause Paris is where the free accommodation is *waves to [profile] kasneeze) and then 10 days in England/UK. Only 5 weeks to get everything organised...

This is my first proper overseas trip (NZ does not count), and it's far and away the longest holiday I've ever been on. Which means that I'm very excited, but only slightly less nervous. I'm hoping to get the dates finalised and tickets booked this week.

On that note, anyone out there got any tips/warnings/dos and don'ts/things to do and see? So far, the collective wisdom of my RL friends has informed me that:
a. Europe is full of pickpockets so talented that they steal the clothes off your back and you never even notice,
b. Europe is a very good place to go to pick up guys from Australia (with bonus points if they actually come from your home town), and
c. Starting a conversation on a plane with 'Hi Jack' is a Very Bad Idea.

In other matters, I've got the latest episode of Supernatural but in an unnatural bout of good-sisterlyness, have decided to wait for [profile] bob_ette to arrive tomorrow before watching it. This has nothing to do with the fact I have SG-1 and Dr Who to watch tonight. I heard there has been some... interesting fan reactions to this one, so I'm especially curious about it.
lyore: (Default)
Times like these I hate being in Australia. By the time I watch Supernatural and get onto LJ, everyone has already said everything I wanted to say. Although I do want to know... )

Hmm, ok, apparently I had more to say there than I thought :)

And did anyone else think that Linda Blair looked like Carrie Fisher, or was it just me?
lyore: (Default)
Right. I think this evening is the first time since Saturday that I've been home for more than half and hour and not either a) frantically getting ready to leave again or b) asleep. So, the quick run down on my social life over the last few days, for those that care:

The weekend was great - combined birthday bash, which is always good, and lots of catching up with friends. For those of you who haven't seen my birthday present from the uni gang, check it here here. It's very cool guys, thanks!

Monday night - a 'tax party' with [profile] cloverfizz and housemate, (with special guest appearance by..., via msn messenger), prompted by the fact that none of us had done our tax returns and they are due at the end of the month. Much angsting about what the hell to do about work related allowances was had by all.

Tuesday night - Caught up with [profile] kasneeze at her ex-work.

And, of course, work has been hectic and meeting-ful. The highlight of the day was discovering that apparently Americans really like Tim Tams. To a scary extent.

The downside of the last two days has been the reappearance of the ToothAche From Hell. I think the little bastards know they are getting pulled out, and are intent on making my life as miserable as possible beforehand. Today hasn't been too bad - expect when I eat. Ah well, I needed to go on a diet anyway, I guess. Step aside Atkins - the Wisdom Tooth diet is here!

On a SPN note - saw Bloodlust. Detailed comments shall have to wait for another time, but I have to say - the first scene, and the transport, and the choice of music? MUCH LOVE.

[personal profile] seldear posted this link A study of LJ friending and friendships - David Fono . An interesting read, although it really doesn't say much that I hadn't already observed myself. But he did a study, with a methodology and everything, so now it's official :)

But I found this quote interesting - "Robert Putnam expresses the popular academic viewpoint that online relationships are inherently dysfunctional by default, because they do not actually permit the formation of rich social capital."

Personally, I don't consider my lj 'friendships' any more dysfunctional than my real life friendships. And, just like RL, I have different levels and types of 'friendship' with different people in my flist. Some on my flist are acquantainces, some are better friends, depending on the degree of interaction.

Anyway, enough of that. As well as spending some quality time bonding with the internet now I have my BB to myself, I've also finished the rough draft of the 'SG-1 watches Serenity' fic. It still has a way to go before I'd send it off to be beta'd, but I was wondering -anyone want to volunteer? Ideally, I'd be looking for advice on the characterisation and dialogue primarily, but also on the concept itself, since this is basically a ten-page fic of not very much substance. Pretty much an exercise in seeing whether I could write their voices, with hopefully a little bit of humour thrown in. And I really need someone who will tell me if it sucks - this is the first time I've tried anything remotely like this *is nervous*. Oh, and knowledge of Firefly/Serenity is not necessary, although would be nice. So, after that demanding list of requirements, are there any takers?

In other news, according to my completely reliable survey, the most popular Winchester in SPN is... the Metallicar, with 43% of the vote! Closely followed by Sam and Dean, tied with 29% each. (These figures brought to you by the Department of Rounding and Statistical Abuse.)

Today's random fact - I finally found out what GIP means. It's been bugging me for ages...
lyore: (Default)
Today is my First Official Sickday. Apparently, I should keep up the great Aussie Sickie tradition of nicking off to the beach, but a) the closest beach is a few hours away, and b) I really don't feel up to it. So I am updating my livejournal instead.

I said a few days ago that I was photoshopping a bunch of reminders for my sister. I'm quiet pleased with how they turned out, and since [profile] bob_ette also wanted to show them off, I thought I'd dump them up here. If nothing else, pictures of the SPN boys can always cheer up your day.

Two more under the cut )

I also made a shiny new icon. *points to icon*
lyore: (Default)
Since I got tagged - 'Write out any (as many as you'd like) plots/story-ideas (from any fandom) that you would LIKE to write, but can't seem to fully realize. You don't have to give away plot points, just a general idea.' )

On the topic of fic, [profile] redbyrd_sgfic has a couple of new-to-the-web fics up. I recommend checking them out, but make sure you have a fair chunk of time free.

This evening has been spent photoshopping some 'reminder' notices for [profile] bob_ette. She says she'll notice them more with Dean and Sam on them, but I think she just wants an excuse to have pictures of the Supernatural boys on the refridgerator. And the bathroom mirror. And the milk. Not that I mind, since it meant I spent the last hour or so staring at a picture of a very nice looking Dean...

I also have a few SG-1 and Dr Who icons in the works. Decided it was about time that I got a Daniel icon :)
lyore: (Default)
Ok, so I'm back online. There are many reasons for my absence from the livejournal world, but they mostly involved too many books and DVDs, and the fact that [profile] bob_ette has staged an armed takeover of my internet connection. But she's out at the moment, so I have sole posession - at least until she gets back. This means I've been out of touch with the internet world in general - anything I need to know about?

Anyway, during my little break I have managed to read 10 books (Honor Harrington books by David Weber) and get through all of my new HH dvds, watch the rest of supernatural, and up to episode 4 of Dr Who, so I haven't been completely unproductive :)

All I can say about the Supernatural is... )

This has been an expensive weekend so far, and it is only half-way done. I bought 2 pairs of gloves, and this stole-y type thing. And season one of Dr Who, so all those who were interested in seeing the Captain Jack goodness, I can now oblige. This is (yet another) down side of hating my work - I comfort shop. Oh well, at least it was stuff I needed. And yes, Dr Who does count amoung life's necessities.

Bitching about work - you probably don't want to read this )

I have a few other odds and sods I want to share with people, (including the crazyest patent application I have ever seen, featuring special guest appearances by the Androids of the Grey Aliens) but that may have to wait until I remember to forward myself the emails.

Also, I love Bayside. My new fave band (for the next week or so, anyway).
