Nah, it makes plenty of sense. I look at fandom as a supplement of canon and if I go leafing through fanfic it's because I'm not satisfied with what's being put to me in canon. It's the same with writing and this is why I had a lot of trouble with bob_ette's initial Supernatural fic: everything I wanted was already in the series or seemed promised to come, so what in the hell could I write about? In such cases it falls to writing about things that are either 'missing', the 'uncensored' version of scenes, or making things up entirely. I tend to do the last of these and refer as much as I can to events we've seen in the episodes.
The other day I was gripped with boredom and happened across a fan's "uncensored" version of the "Skin" (ie. doppelganger) episode (again, SPN). It was actually very good and tied itself in seamlessly with the original; but I'm a sucker for anything that's well written. I need a SPN icon.
