Didn't think I'd let this pass without comment did you?

It's odd that it's over, after so long. While I am not totally devastated by the show's ending, I still got chills watching the start of the credits.

I think I can see why they chose this as the last episode - showing the team growing old together and all. Fair enough, but it didn't really have that 'going out with a bang' feeling? I would have loved to have seen something more like Season's Eight's 'Redemption' (which has got to be my favourite storyline payoff in the entire series), but perhaps I'm being unfair, considering we still have the movies. Anyone got dates on those, btw? Plus I can't help reading the whole 'growing old' as a metaphor for the show in the minds of the PTB - on some level, I read it as showing their attitude to the show, and this bothers me a lot. I don't think it is deliberate - but it still bothers me.

The other ironic thing is that that catalyst for this episode was the SGC finally getting their hands on technology. Perhaps this was an attempt by the PTB to get back to the basics of the show, in which case I think they misjudged significantly. While obtaining advanced technology was always a priority for the SGC, from the audience POV I think the early emphasis was on exploration. I think it says something if the showrunners think 'finally getting the goods (and they turn out to be more trouble than they're worth)', should be the payoff for 10 years of galactic exploration.

Anyway, apart from that, I thought the episode was well-acted and sold by the actors, although I still have mixed feelings about the Daniel/Vala elements. Apart from being absolutely aghast during Daniel's rant (not the content, which I could buy, but the thought that the last episode, last significant piece of Daniel-dialogue was motivated by an attempt to hurt), I really could have bought the whole 'hooking up because we are stuck on a spaceship for the rest of our lives' angle. I just have mixed feelings about an attempt to portray it as more than that.

And that last scene - what was that? Some sort of attempt to sum up the lessons learnt through the last ten years? (In that case, where was 'The very young do not always do as they are told'?) A statement that everything they've learnt by going through the gate travel they could have figured out if they listened to their grandmothers?

My personal ending would have been just one, either from Teal'c or Daniel - 'Life's to short'.

And one more thing - I liked the 'off to save the world again' elements, of the team still going on although the show is finished, but the knowledge that Sam ends up on Atlantis kinda spoiled it a bit, I guess. Oh well. *sigh*

That's it, I guess - apart from the movies, and the fanfic, and the discussions... so not over at all, really :)

The Sam part makes me sad. Because that was such a perfect ending with them going through the Gate, same as always, to fight the good fight and to explore. You lose some of that impact knowing one of your cnaon characters is going to be taken away from the team :(

Will read comments after I've seen last episode, which, you conveniently forgot to give me before you fell asleep last night. :P I should have prodded you for that while I was transferring photos.

Yes, exactly!

Love the Sam icon, btw.
