Well, guess who got her letter of offer for her Masters today? Go me.

In other news of awesome, courtesy of [personal profile] animator, the most awesome macro to ever awesome:

(Outside a cut since the image is small - let me know if it causes any problems for anyone.)

Also from [personal profile] animator: The Order of the Science Scouts of Exemplary Repute and Above Average Physique. I qualify for way to many of those badges *g*

I had to look twice at that picture because I couldn't have seen... no... wait... I *did* see Vader on wires rocking on with a posse of rebels.

[DIES]

Best. Macro. Ever. That picture is great. I've been procrastinating lately with SW ever since Ep 2 was on free to air Saturday night. It is a worthy sacrifice.

Brilliant, isn't it?

Great minds think alike, I guess. I watched Empire Strikes Back on the weekend - purely for fic research purposes, of course!

I love that picture so much. I crack up every time I see it.

But this? Best. Macro. Ever.

And congrats!

You wouldn't happen to have a link to a higher res version, would you? I can't find a bigger one...

I crack up every time I see it.

I just couldn't stop laughing when my friend sent me this version. Rather embarrassing, since I was in the office at the time! *g*

congrats

Thanks!

That image will never be not awesome. ♥

I have no idea who'd thought that the Star Wars cast would be good candidates for a rock band AU, but they deserve a big shiny medal.

We could award it to them in a ceremony just like the one at Yavin! (Except there would be more guitars) *g*

Woot! Congrats on the letter! :D

What kills me about that picture is that every time I look at it, Chewie reminds me of Animal from the Muppets. >_< Which is bloody hilarious. Also I love Darth's rock pose. :D

Thanks!

What really gets me with the picture is the idea of Luke Skywalker in a rock band - somehow the mental image just does not compute *g*

You know, in a weird way, Luke is actually the one that made the most sense for me. >_< He's totally the kind of kid who had a garage band back on Tatooine. He and Biggs, Deak, and Windy were certain they would make it big some day.

Darth, now... Darth in a rock band is hilarious. The only thing that could be funnier is Palpatine. Although the Palpatine of the Star Wars Gangsta Rap did make a distressingly good rapper...

I guess can see Luke in a garage band, but not a heavy rock band, you know? But the dreaming of making it big... well, that sounds like Luke :)

(I have not heard of the Star Wars Gangsta Rap. Worth checking out?)

No, I doubt Luke would be into heavy rock. He's more like the Beatles type. ;)

You haven't seen the Star Wars Gangsta Rap? *gasps* OMG, you must go find it! I know it's on Atom Films, and I'm sure it's on youtube somewhere. It is sheer silly brilliance.

Woot! Congratulations!

(This is acceptance to pursue the masters? At least that's what I infer from context and prior postage. How does it work in Australia?)

Yep, that's it. It's them saying they accept my application, and I need to accept their acceptance of my application *g*

Cause I'm interested if this is the same as the US - in Australia, a master in engineering is a professional qualification rather than a research one, normally requiring one year of coursework (two years part time in my case). We do a major research project as our honours year of our bachelors which satisfies the requirement for acceptance into a PhD, if we want to go down that path. Is it the same over the pond?

In the US, a master's in engineering is a research thing- you probably wouldn't get one unless you wanted to teach or do research for your work. We have a professional engineer certification, which is our professional qualification, but it's not a degree- it's two part, an exam on theory, plus minimum experience levels (with other professional engineers attesting to your qualifications- it's min 4 years with a four year degree, I think, 8 with a two year degree and 12 years of experience with no degree- but you still have to pass all the exams which are like finals for four years of college) and then another exam. I've taken the first part but never bothered with the second- it's mostly useful for civil or mechanical engineers work in construction-type projects (most places require that qualified PE sign off on say, final building plans, that sort of thing. There's no equivalent in manufacturing, so I would have had trouble getting enough affidavits to verify my experience even if I'd chosen to pursue it.)

But that's totally a digression. My masters is in business, not engineering (which is pretty common in manufacturing- you tend to do less technical stuff as you get promoted, not more). And we did a business related final project, which wasn't really research. It was a one year program full-time plus the project, or up to three years part time- and I had to do prereqs before I could start.

From there, I probably would qualify to go for a PhD in business, but might need a masters in engineering before I could pursue a PhD in engineering...requirements are not always the same at different schools, either.

Requirements to get in are fairly simple- there's a standardized test that's sort of a lowest-common-denominator minimum req, and then you put in an application form. Not too complex, as I recall. But then I was going to a state school, that happened to be near where I lived, not trying to get into one of the more prestigious institutions- I believe they have a lot more hoops to jump through.

Interesting. We also have a professional engineering certification, (Chartered Professional Engineer), which requires you have a Bachelors from an accredited uni, have completed a lot of things called 'Career Episode Reports', where you demonstrate you have met certain professional 'competencies', and then an interview. It's supposed to take at least 5 years after you graduate to get it, although I know some people get it in less.

In Australia, it's unusual to find someone with a masters and a PhD - as I said, we have this thing called 'honours', which negates the need to do a masters for entry into a PhD. So theoretically, I could have gone directly from my undergrad degree to my PhD right now - in fact, I turned down a couple of offers to do just that! (Mostly because I liked the idea of getting paid... *g*) And no exams, at least that I know off, it's mostly applications and written stuff and interviews.

We have the same thing, doing less technical work as we get promoted - it's one of the reasons I'm doing this one now, while I still can *g*

Interesting how two different countries can have such different takes on things with the same name!
