lyoreGenerally, I'm not to keen on birthdays - either something goes wrong, or someone is in a really feral mood, or some other disaster occurs. But, for once, this one went of without a hitch (apart from the rampant hayfever - but I'm pretty much immune, so that didn't bother me too much :)).
Of course, most importantly - I GOT MY IPOD!! :) I call him Menhir. So very shiny. And a promise of the first season Battlestar Gallatica boxset from Bob/ette and the Other Sister, once we return to civilisation. (Civilisation being defined as towns with more than one dedicated DVD shop).
For anyone who wants to hear about the rest of my day, here's Lyore's version of
After having bacon and eggs for breakfast, and shopping for birthday presents (yes, we are all very organised in my family - I blame the Other Sister not giving us a list until wednesday) we headed off to the races (of the horse variety) for the arvo. It was Caufield Cup day, people! Parents raided the money jar and presented us with $10 betting money each. Believe it or not, I did make a profit by the end of the day.
Got there just before the first race - in time for me to pick the winner, but not to bet on in. *sigh* The highlight of the races was probably when one of the horses - one which Bob/ette had backed - decided that he didn't feel like turning the corner (you know - actually following the track around) but continued on in a straight line. He was winning, until that point. Afterwards, not so much. Funny to watch - even funnier to see the reaction of the Jockey once they had pulled up at the end. He was NOT impressed.
As all the local races paused for the Caulfield cup, when it rocked around we headed over to the non-local bookies to bet on that race. Following the advice of my grandmother, both mum and Bob/ette backed the winner, Railings. For depressing racing news - Mummify, who ran third (and has previously won the Melbourne Cup) broke his leg about a furlong after the end, and had to be put down.
Overall, I backed a third place, and a first. We developed a new betting scheme - go for the horse with the most interesting colours. Both the jockey with the smiley face, and the jockey in the Rabbitoh's colours (red and green, with a rabbit on the front/back) won their races. We tried to follow this plan, but the next race had fairly uninteresting designs. We settled on the guy with a horseshoe, who ended up coming third. Obviously, his colours just weren't quite cool enough.
So, upshot was that we all had a good time - apart from the thousand flies which descended upon us as soon as we opened the car door, and the fact that the rest of the family decided that now would be a good time to develop hayfever-from-hell.
After stopping by my Grandmother's for cake and afternoon tea (and a phone call from__happy__) we headed home and had takeaway Indian for tea. Yes, we do have (one) Indian here. Finished up the day watching Sahara, which my mother hadn't seen before. Not quite sure of her reaction, 'cause I kept falling asleep. This is what happens when people wake me before 12 noon :)
Hmm... one of the new down lights in my room is flickering. A lot. Like some weird EM alien is trying to communicate using their version of morse code. Alternatively, it could be overheating, but I thought that they were supposed to turn off when they do that? Of course, given the electrician managed to put a hole in my ceiling in the wrong spot, before putting his foot through the ceiling in my parent's room, anything is possible. As long as it doesn't burst into flames, I guess.
Random Observation of the Day - iPod's are seriously cool. Very, very nice, and even nicer when they belong to you.
