Huzzah! Paid account! And other things...
Apr. 30th, 2006 11:04 amLook! A header! And all it cost was twenty minutes on photoshop, 5 minutes figuring out the customisation thingy, thanks to a handy-dandy tutorial, and $25US. Yeah, that's right, I finally bit the bullet and bought a paid account. Figured the amount of time I spend on here, I probably should - and besides, I wanted more icon space. And a cool header (go check it out!)
During my morning's perusal of lj and other internet-type places, I found this link. It's an audio interview praising fanficion, but using the dubious example of Lori Jareo to do it.
To Blur Plagiarism's Lines, Look to 'Star Wars'

This week, there are two stories of novels that draw too heavily on the work of other writers. Novelist and book critic Lev Grossman says that Kaavya Viswanathan deserves all the criticism she is getting.
But, Grossman says, Lori Jareo (who wrote an unauthorized Star Wars book) is one of the unsung heroes of the wired, post-modern cultural universe: a fan-fic, or fan fiction, writer.
Lev Grossman is a staff writer for Time magazine. His latest novel is Codex
Ok, I'm glad they like fanfic, it's nice to get some positive press for a change, but you think you could not praise the person who broke just about every unwritten fanfic rule there is? I thought it was an interesting article, mostly because they are praising fanfic writers for their dedication, and I get the feeling that they are just using the Jareo thing as an excuse to talk about fanfic, but still...
Remember a day or so ago, when I was saying I had all this stuff to watch? It just got worse. I went round to
cloverfizz's place yesterday, and came back with the full series of Full Metal Alchemist. So far, I've only seen the first 9 episodes, but it's so cute, even with the random anime style things. I really like the way they actually have Ed reacting to events - not overly emo or anything, but, you know, the first time someone tries to kill him, he holds it together while it's going on, and then bursts into tears when it's over. And the fact that at some points you look at it and go, yeah, a 11/12/15 year-old would so do that. As
cloverfizz pointed out, burning your house so you can't go home is such 12 year old logic. On the other hand, before I handed 'incredible cosmic powers' over to that kid, I'd send him to some anger management classes or something :) And Al is cute - just want to give him a hug, but he may be a bit too spiky for that.
On the other hand, anyone else find the theme song totally random? I've gotten used to it, but the first time, it was just... huh?
So yeah, if I've completely dropped out of sight in RL, it's only because I'm buried in a pile of DVDs. Feel free to come and join me, anytime :)
On other news,
bob_ette just walked out of her bedroom, looking like a cockatoo. Seriously, any rooster would be proud of that comb :P

A paid account, huh? I've been toying with the idea, but it's such a leap from free to paying, even for such a pittance. What do you get with the non-mooching status?

Date: 2006-04-30 02:12 am (UTC)Paid account - More icons! 30 for starters, then I think they (slowly) increase it, depending on how long you have a paid account. You can buy an extra 100, or something, as well. And scrapbook space (2G from memory). There's a whole lot of extra searching type things, like through locations and stuff, but I haven't played with that yet. Plus friendfriends, and access to advance customisations and stuff.
Err, yeah, mostly I got it for the userpics, and so I could easily add a header while keeping this style. Plus, since I use it so much, I don't really mind paying (a little bit, anyway). Also, since I have paid for it, it's incentive for me to keep using it. I may also start using the scrapbook thing instead of photobucket, for simplicity.

Date: 2006-04-30 03:11 am (UTC)Really, It's no wonder lyore has a mentally ill sister. First she says that i look like a cockatoo, then when i wash my hair and make it sit down flat, she says i have a mullett and calls me macgyver girl!
You suck.

You do realise that she now expects me to cook?
Maybe you should come back.

Date: 2006-04-30 07:08 am (UTC)Nice job on the header! Did you have to adjust the colouration at all?
Full Metal Alchemist is awesome... I am happy to have sucked you into it! You'll be an anime fangirl before you know it! ^__-
"Even with the random anime things"? What kind of statement is that?
(And should you feel like removing Andromeda from the DVD watching list for a few days, I wouldn't mind stealing them back to take some screencaps now I have the laptop ^__^)

Date: 2006-04-30 08:39 am (UTC)Anime fangirl - hmmm. I've just been informed that I am watching more anime at the moment than the VP of the ANU anime society. I may have to conceed on this point. BTW, I'm burning myself a copy of this, OK?
Random anime things - like all the weird stuff that goes on with the Strongarm dude. Seriously, that's just strange.
I'd give you Andromeda, but I'm not sure when I'm going to see you next. We should be able to work something out.

Date: 2006-04-30 08:57 am (UTC)And rofl at you watching more than the VP. Speaking of the ANU people, looks like I mght be tagging along with Kim to one of their screenings sometime, so that should be fun.
That counts as alteration to me! It looks very pretty, as you've already been told :)
Andromeda, yay. I'm having fun running around finding decent pics anyway, so it's not urgent. And back to the icon making! (I have been so deprived not having a computer so I'm having fun...) Making quote icons, actually... WHy is it at work I can come up with a million quotes and now I can't think of more than a dozen...lol

Date: 2006-04-30 07:55 am (UTC)You've seen more anime than I have recently and that's not right. I was behind the desk at the screening last Friday, wandered into the theatre on a whim, came away aghast that I had enjoyed those three minutes so much! I've forgotten how funny it can be! (Everyone says FMA must be watched, that will be next on my "to watch" list)
