Let me say right up front that this isn't addressed to the book itself, but rather to some reactions I've been seeing.

ETA 'Cause I realised I wasn't very clear - this is addressed to those complaining that Tonks chose to leave her son to join the battle at Hogwarts.

Listen up, people. Tonks is an Auror. Fighting Dark Wizards is her job. She didn't just stop being an Auror when she had her kid. Yeah, it really, really sucks that Teddy got left without both his parents, but this is war. Having kids doesn't suddenly give you some great 'excuse you from all your responsibilities' card.

Yes, she left her son (with her mother, I might add, she didn't randomly drop him on a doorstep somewhere), but there was a great big battle for the future of the wizarding world going on, and the good guys needed every fighter they could get their hands on. And Tonks, when she isn't pining after her guy, is a capable, trained fighter, protege of Mad-Eye Moody himself. Of course she fought.

Hell, if you *have* to have someone stay behind, what about Lupin? After all, he isn't the one with all the training, but I don't see anyone criticising him for fighting at the end. For his behaviour before, yes. Not for this. (For the record, I think that he would also be a very valuable ally, but he doesn't have some greater inherent right to be there.)

This? This sorts of double standard pisses me right off.

(Not getting into whether or not this was particularly well written - the criticisms I've seen have been about the act itself, which is what I'm addressing.)

Right. Sorry about that. *wipes rant off the keyboard*

It's odd. I've never really been a Tonks fan, I certainly never thought my first DH-related rant would be defending her. *slightly bemused*

I haven't been one of those complaining that Tonks left her son, but I wouldn't have minded her staying behind either. Her son was still very young--still a nursing child, most likely. It's understandable for a mother to still be on maternity leave at that time--or just not to leave her child at that time, and this wasn't really part of her official job.

OTOH, I understood her leaving because this was not part of her job--it was a fight to save the world, really. Who could stay out of that when one had the skills and the opportunity to help do something about it?

So, either way I would have been fine with whatever Tonks did. I never really liked her character, though, and I did feel a bit sad that now their son was left as an orphan. hehe

Both Remus and Tonks were a part of the OOTP, so it makes sense that they were both there, but I wouldn't have thought less of Tonks if she hadn't been there.

Oh, I would have completely understood if she'd decided to stay behind. I just get annoyed at the assumption that her leaving means she was 'OMG Worse Mother Eva', or that it showed she didn't love her son.
