3 things meme.

1 - Comment and ask to be tagged!
2 - I will pick THREE of your icons and THREE of your keywords I find odd or nifty!
3 - You post, explaining in detail about the three I chose!
4 - People comment on your post!

I volunteered to be tagged by [personal profile] aizjanika, who picked

1. Hurt/Comfort.

Not as interesting as it sounds, I guess. For a while, this was one of my main genres for fic in the Stargate fandom, more by default than anything else. I liked both Jack and Daniel, but wasn't particularly interested in slash, and this was the next largest genre of fics featuring the two of them together. This comment is true of most of the fandoms where I have a strong interest in two male characters (Luke and Han in Star Wars, Darien and Bobby in Invisible Man. Plus, for Stargate, it had the added bonus of very rarely including any Jack/Sam (I love both the characters, but REALLY dislike the ship, mostly because of the attitudes and handling of it by the TPTB). The Danny-whumping was a nice added bonus.

Of course, you still often have the incredibly over-the-top emoting at times, but oh well, nothing's perfect, I guess :)

2. Full Metal Alchemist

The first anime I've ever watched. I really enjoyed the series, but was disapointed by the ending. I was hoping to find some good fic, but have never really gotten into the fandom, partly because I haven't read the manga (my inability to read comics extends to manga, apparently), and partly because I don't have any mutual friends in that fandom.

3. Martial Arts

I used to do Tae Kwon Do, but haven't been for a few years. With luck, now that I have a car, and no longer have theses and assignments, I should be able to get back into it soon. Apart from anything else, I miss the stress release of thumping things :)

1.

Ah yes. My Star Wars OTP :) [personal profile] necromage and I watched the Clone Wars cartoons together, and decided that a) Red Commander was so totally COOL, and b) Obi-Wan and Red Commando where so totally In Love. Why Red Commander is cool, and he and Obi-Wan are completey in love.

The cartoons are a hoot, if you haven't watched them, you should.

2.

This one was a quote icon, but I forget who originally said it. Sirius was my favourite character in the HP books, and needless to say I was not a happy camper after book 5. Still, I loathe that book for many more reasons than just the pointless death of my favourite character - what a over-long, convoluted mess. It didn't help that the book came out the day before my Quantum Mechanics exam - I wasted an entire day reading a novel reminiscent of badly-written fanfiction, when I could have been studying, or at least procrastinating by reading some well-written fanfic!

3.

One of my few serious OTPs. In Lego! Blushing Leia in lego! And a caption that always reminds me of The Princess Bride - what's not to love?

Actually did some writing today. Yay! Only about 1000 words, but considering I only had an hour in between everything else that had to be done, it's not bad. And no, [profile] bob_ette, it's not the SPN/SW crossover - it's the 'Han Solo and Darth Vader walk into a lift' one.

Today is ANZAC day here in Oz. I didn't get to any of the services, but still - Lest We Forget.

1. Hurt/Comfort.

hehe I love the hurt/comfort genre for both slash and gen in fic, so I wondered how you became interested in it. I love the angst, but, yeah, the over emoting could be a bit much sometimes. When I first started reading fic, though, I ate that up. *g* I knew it was OTT, but I didn't care. *g*

Even sometimes now, if a story is the type that I like, I can gloss over that and still enjoy the story much more easily than I could if the story contained lots of grammar or especially punctuation errors or any ship stuff, especially Sam/Jack or even a mention of Vala. *g*

2. Full Metal Alchemist

The first anime I've ever watched.

hehe So, I deduce that it's an anime series? What is "manga"? I've seen this word before and I am sure I've asked and someone's explained it to me, but I completely forget what it is.

I've never seen The Clone Wars cartoons, so I didn't recognize that in the icon. I actually thought the figure was supposed to be God or Jesus. *g* I see now that the other thing is a helmet of some sort, but originally I just thought it was a design of some sort. *g*

Sirius was my favourite character in the HP books, and needless to say I was not a happy camper after book 5. Still, I loathe that book for many more reasons than just the pointless death of my favourite character - what a over-long, convoluted mess.

I didn't love Book 5, but it was Book 6 that I felt read like some badly-written fanfiction. *g* Did you skip that one? Do you plan to read Book 7? I do just because, as with Stargate, I want to see it through to the end.

I think this has taught me something, though. I think I would have enjoyed the books more if I'd waited until they were finished to read them and had been able to read them all in quick succession. I still would have been thrown by 5 & 6, but I think it would have been less painful. *g*

Thanks for playing. :-)

What is ANZAC day?

I did the same thing :)

Even sometimes now, if a story is the type that I like, I can gloss over that and still enjoy the story much more easily than I could if the story contained lots of grammar or especially punctuation errors or any ship stuff, especially Sam/Jack or even a mention of Vala. *g*

Yep, also the same. And sometimes you're just in the mood for some ridiculously OOT emoting, OOC-ness be damned :)

So, I deduce that it's an anime series? What is "manga"? I've seen this word before and I am sure I've asked and someone's explained it to me, but I completely forget what it is.

Yep, it's an anime series. And Manga is basically just Japanese comics. You'll often see them togther, because a lot of anime is based on Manga, and vice versa. Which leads to it's own set of 'canon' issues, and feuding fans.

I actually thought the figure was supposed to be God or Jesus.

*laughs* nothing so religous, I'm afraid :) It's the same fellow who is in this icon *points up* The cartoons are good, but probably best when watched with fellow fans willing to make fun of the series.

I didn't love Book 5, but it was Book 6 that I felt read like some badly-written fanfiction. *g* Did you skip that one? Do you plan to read Book 7?

My biggest problem with book 5 is that so far, none of the story threads which made it so bloated have paid off yet. Perhaps JK will work everything into the final work, but I'll admit to being dubious. I read Book 6, and thought it was a minor improvement on book 5, apart from the lack of connection between the two (emotionally and from a narrative perspective).

I'll read Book 7 - I won't stand in line for it, but I may get it from Big W or something the day it comes out, since they have it cheap. As you say, it's like Stargate - I've followed it for so long, I'll stick it out to the end.

ANZAC day (25 April) - is probably Australia's most important national occasion. It marks the anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli by Australian and New Zealand forces in the First World War (ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps). Basically, now it's a national holiday to commemorate the soldiers killed in war, and soldiers generally. Sort of like Remembrance day (do you have that?) but a MUCH bigger deal. Dawn Services, Marches, Memorial services, reunions, all that sort of stuff

Plus, it's the one day of the year it's legal to play two-up :)

hehe Yeah, sometimes I can just sort of ignore it and the story will still work for me, though sometimes it doesn't. *g* It's not as likely to ruin a story for me as incorrect punctuation. *g*

*laughs* nothing so religous, I'm afraid :)

Hee! But doesn't he look like a drawing/cartoon figure of Jesus? *g*

It's the same fellow who is in this icon *points up* The cartoons are good, but probably best when watched with fellow fans willing to make fun of the series.

Yeah. I'm not into Star Wars enough to want to watch them, and Episode III really ruined the entire series/story for me anyway.

I've already got Book 7 of HP on pre-order at Amazon, just because I'm too lazy to go out and buy it. Also, I have all the other books, so I need this one for a complete set, and I know I'll buy it and read it anyway, so I decided just to get it right away.

We have Memorial Day here which is soon, I think. That's probably similar.

'Come in Spinner'

Date: 2007-04-27 12:45 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lyore.livejournal.com
Two-up is a gambling game that originated in the Aussie goldfields in the 19th century.
.
Picture a large group of guys standing in a circle. One of them (The Boxer) runs the game. He calls 'Come in Spinner', and the first player (the 'Spinner') enters the circle. The Spinner places the coins on the kip (a piece of wood) - one head up, one tail up - and then throws ('spins') the coins into the air.

People bet on the outcome of each Spin, and the Spinner's objective is to spin heads ("headed them") three times before he collects winnings from the centre. He can then bet as he wishes or retire. If he spins one head and one tail ("oned them"), it's classed as a "no throw" and the Spinner repeats the toss until he gets a result. The Spinner loses by throwing tails ("tailed them") or by throwing odds five times in a row. Side bets are collected after each spin.

The Kip then passes clockwise to the next player and the game continues. Oh, and you also have the Cockatoo, who is the lookout to warn of police raids.

So, there you go. More than you ever wanted to know about two up :)

The redeeming feature of Episode III was, for me, the relationship between Anakin and Obi-Wan. It was so sad... *sniff*

Thanks! I actually did want to know. I'm sure I still wouldn't be able to figure out how to play, but at least now I have an idea of what it is. *g*

hehe It was exactly the opposite for me. This is exactly why I hated it and now hate all the Star Wars movies.

I've only played once. It's very easy (basically, just flipping two coins off a stick into the air). The complicated bit is the betting :)

It was exactly the opposite for me

Different strokes, I guess. But can I ask why? You didn't like the way it was portrayed, or the friendship itself, or it just didn't work for you?

I didn't like the way that Obi-wan treated Anakin--or the way that anyone treated him. We were supposed to accept that Anakin was inherently evil and an enemy even though that had not been established in the previous two movies or even in Episode III, IMHO. I didn't like the way the transition was done between Episode III and IV.

In Episode IV and beyond, Obi-wan was arrogant, self-centered, and manipulative. Yoda was much the same. I didn't hate Obi-wan in the original trilogy, but after seeing Episode III, I did hate him.

Also, in all three prequels, I think it was set up that those opposing the emperor were just about as bad as what they were fighting against. They did all sorts of bad things in the name of saving the galaxy. The sense of doing what was right and good that was there in the original trilogy was lost in the first three movies.

Fair enough. I have major issues with the Jedi Council, for most of the reasons you've mentioned here. But I've somehow avoided tarring Obi-wan with the same brush - perhaps because I have a bit of a blindspot for the Anakin/Obi-wan friendship, but also because I did think that the movie showed they genuinely were friends. I've always seen Obi-Wan as a little arrogant and manipulative, but not really selfish.

The whole situation in the movie deteriorated way too fast, of course. I also came out of the movie feeling not particularly sad about the Jedi getting annihilated - not the feeling I think GL was aiming for there :)

So yes, I pretty much agree with most of your comments - but I'm (kinda) willing to overlook some of it for the sake of the doomed friendship between A and OW.

Yeah. I don't know why I'm not. It just made me feel bad about the whole thing because it did happen so fast and it seemed like it could easily have been prevented or things might have happened differently somehow. I don't really know. I just lost my Star Wars love. :-(

Noooo! You can't loose your Star Wars love over the lousy Prequels! You need to go get some Brain Bleach and then rewatch the Original Trilogy until it comes back, and you can forget the Prequels ever happened. Or at least, that's what I do with the EU and episodes 1 and 2.

hehe Well, I was never a huge fan of Star Wars anyway. I liked it, but it was more my kids that were fanatical about it and into that fandom--especially my daughter. She still is in the fandom, though she is unhappy with the EU stuff, too.

I can't forget the prequels happened, though. *g* I really liked *that* Anakin--at least the one of Episodes II and III. *g* I must be evil. :-)

Yep, that must be it :)

I don't mind the Anakin of episodes II and III - I just have difficulty mentally fitting the 'Anakin' shaped character into the 'Vader' shaped character, without a lot of mental gymnastics. I see that stage he was at the end of RotS as merely the start of the development into the Vader we see in ANH, and while I can fanwank that journey in my head, I would have liked to have seen a more direct relationship on screen.

Em... In case you haven't noticed, I can talk about Star Wars pretty much non-stop. Sorry 'bout that :)
