For those of you who haven't heard, Rowling confirms Dumbledore was gay.

Huh. I'm pleased, but a little surprised - given how pointedly it was not confirmed in the books, I didn't expect her to do so in an interview either.

As I commented to [personal profile] vasher earlier, JKR frustrates me. She has all this incredibly backstory, and this amazing imagination, and yet sometimes I feel she fails to actually get it in the text. Her comments about 'Dumbledore's great tradegy' - I want to *read* about that, not hear it in an interview. It's the ultimate 'telling, not showing'. (And yeah, I know it really is outside the scope of the books, but I still want it.) *sigh*

Anyway. Now the ultra-conservative Christians have another reason to hate the books :)

I was complaining just a few days ago about the lack of TBLG characters in the Harry Potter books. Huh. Kind of sinks Dumbledore/McGonagall, though, doesn't it? (Well, until it's Fan Wanked out of existence.) I wonder what other characters are quietly going along their queer way.

I guess that's the problem - every time one ship is confirmed, another sinks.

Other queer characters - Sirius and Remus, of course :)

On the one hand, the focus of the books was indeed on Harry, and damned if I wasn't tired of the assloads of random exposition in DH already. On the other hand, yeah, it would have been nice to actually see (sort of) those events. Pensieve? Pfft, if she mentioned Aberforth/Goat, she could have stuck in Albus/Gellert somewhere in there. Though that was some pretty loud subtext by itself. XD She mentioned something about making an HP encyclopedia, yes? Maybe something like the Silmarillion.

Anyways, somebody needs to ask her who else swings a little left of right.

Yeah, it's a bit of a balancing act, isn't it? I think part of the problem is her backstory all seems to come in great big chunks - so lots of Dumbledore backstory in DH, but none spread over the rest of the series. And that subtext - it's one of the reasons I'm surprised she confirmed it in an interview. It was so strong I figured if she was actually willing to come right out and say it she would have in the book itself. Definitely something I am glad to be wrong about.

I have mixed feelings about the encyclopedia - it will be cool, unless I don't like most of what's in there :) Still, I take non-book sources as quasi-canon at best, so I have no trouble ignoring it when required :)

I'm always going to have a soft spot for Sirius and Remus. Partly because it's the easiest way for me to find fics with my two favourite characters in it :)

If she wants to write more about the HP world she may end up going back in time to Albus' youth rather than Harry Potter's married life.

I wouldn't be surprised if the sixth or seventh movie will allude to Albus and Grindelwald any more pointedly. I could have lots of fun pointing at the screen with "haha, I don't remember reading this!" I'd enjoy getting additional scenes that weren't in the books (provided they don't spit in the face of canon).

I'd much rather have Albus's youth (or the Maruader era), rather than happily-married Harry. Not because I have anything against happily-married-Harry, but I find the earlier stuff more interesting. (With a great big caveat of 'as long as she doesn't screw it up', of course.)

I wouldn't be surprised if the sixth or seventh movie will allude to Albus and Grindelwald any more pointedly.

I'll be interested if they do the scene that was being written (Dumbledore reminiscing about a girl) with a guy instead... then I will be impressed.
