A walk down HP memory lane...
Jun. 17th, 2006 11:26 pmI've just spent an absolutely fascinating hour or so reading through the msscribe saga over on bad_penny (journalfen account). For those of you who haven't spent anytime in the HP fandom, it's probably of very limited interest (except for the sheer WTF?ry, and master use of sock puppets).
Although, the background should be recommended reading for anyone trying to understand the state of the HP fandom, both currently and historically, especially the situation surrounding the formation of most of the major HP archives. I used to lurk back on the lists (including HP4GU) when all this was going on, and it's interesting to see the whole picture. (Yes,
cloverfizz, HP was my first fandom. Don't hate me too much.)
Ah, the Good Old Days. Back when BNF meant BNF (Cassie Clare, anyone?), none of the major sites talked to the others (well, not unless restraining orders were involved ^_^), and sockpuppets ruled the earth (hey, who needs anonymous memes when you have a sockpuppet, hey?). In fact, it makes the current 'hate meme" wank look tiny in comparison.
Speaking of Hate Memes, a few of the commenters have mentioned that they think this shit is responsible for a lot of the general hatred and BNF-hate that's still around today. I think they're probably right - some of this shit was seriously nasty. When I think about it, this stuff is probably one of the main reasons it took me over 5 years to stop lurking in fandom, and start actively contributing. And when I did, you can be sure it wasn't in any HP areas.
HP fandom. What can you say?

Date: 2006-06-17 01:50 pm (UTC)I didn't know you were in fandom for that long. Yay for oldbies! I keep finding friends of mine who are total oldbies.
I still say my biggest oldbie claim to fame is that I watched the wanksplosion on the FF.N forums when Cassie Claire got kicked off. Boy was that eye-opening for a naive teenager who happened to be on staff at FF.N as a columnist.
Makes me so glad I've stayed out of most of fandom. :-)

Date: 2006-06-17 02:01 pm (UTC)Yep, I've been floating around fandom for quite a while, now. I also remember the CC plagiarism debacle (which has GOT to get some sort of recognition as the biggest scandal in any fandom ever), although I heard most of it second or third hand, since I never visited the FFN forums. I may have to get you to give me an insider's perspective of it one day (i.e. Did she do it?)
Like I said - the sheer amount of wankiness and clique-iness of the HP fandom in the early days is one of the reason's I'm still reluctant to get involved in fandom other than in my own safe little LJ.

Date: 2006-06-19 01:08 pm (UTC)And I just realised that comment sounded so fame-seeking. I think what I meant is just how surprised I was to see myself there and how surprised I am that half my friendslist seems to be reading this. And there am I, mousing away in the comments, hopefully not being a jerk. Because if I was, my whole flist would know. ;-)

Date: 2006-06-17 08:06 pm (UTC)Words fail me at the magnitude of WTF-edness.
How come I always come in too late for the fireworks?!
So, does that mean that you would be the lj-user of choice if one would like to comprehend the inticate workings of HP fandom? ;)

Date: 2006-06-17 11:44 pm (UTC)As far as the HP fandom goes - I could give you a general idea, but I dropped out of the HP fandom for a while after OotP, and now I just tend to monitor things over there with a general expression of WTF? pasted all over my face.

Date: 2006-06-22 12:22 pm (UTC)It is completely fascinating in a weird way, even though it's not my fandom. (Kind of makes me glad about that)

Date: 2006-06-22 12:48 pm (UTC)The reactions of people have been... enlightening. Most people are being really good about it, and there's a fair bit of soul-searching going on.
