*Casting spoilers for SG-1 Season 10*

OMG. How the hell have I missed hearing about this!

I've been thinking for a while now that I need to get back in touch with the SG-1 fandom. This proves my point. It's also turned one of the plot points of season 10 that I most loathed into something I am looking forward to seeing. Well, maybe. We'll see how it works out, I guess.

I was a bad person today. I bought the second season of Smallville - hey, it was on sale )

Anyway, when you combine that with the fact I needed to buy new headphones (the old ones died at the beginning of the week) it's time for some budgeting willpower. We'll see how well that works out...

But now, I have some linky goodness for you all:

[personal profile] seldear posted this link A study of LJ friending and friendships - David Fono . An interesting read, although it really doesn't say much that I hadn't already observed myself. But he did a study, with a methodology and everything, so now it's official :)

But I found this quote interesting - "Robert Putnam expresses the popular academic viewpoint that online relationships are inherently dysfunctional by default, because they do not actually permit the formation of rich social capital."

Personally, I don't consider my lj 'friendships' any more dysfunctional than my real life friendships. And, just like RL, I have different levels and types of 'friendship' with different people in my flist. Some on my flist are acquantainces, some are better friends, depending on the degree of interaction.

Anyway, enough of that. As well as spending some quality time bonding with the internet now I have my BB to myself, I've also finished the rough draft of the 'SG-1 watches Serenity' fic. It still has a way to go before I'd send it off to be beta'd, but I was wondering -anyone want to volunteer? Ideally, I'd be looking for advice on the characterisation and dialogue primarily, but also on the concept itself, since this is basically a ten-page fic of not very much substance. Pretty much an exercise in seeing whether I could write their voices, with hopefully a little bit of humour thrown in. And I really need someone who will tell me if it sucks - this is the first time I've tried anything remotely like this *is nervous*. Oh, and knowledge of Firefly/Serenity is not necessary, although would be nice. So, after that demanding list of requirements, are there any takers?

In other news, according to my completely reliable survey, the most popular Winchester in SPN is... the Metallicar, with 43% of the vote! Closely followed by Sam and Dean, tied with 29% each. (These figures brought to you by the Department of Rounding and Statistical Abuse.)

Today's random fact - I finally found out what GIP means. It's been bugging me for ages...

Australia won their soccer game! Go Us! (Ok, well, not that I personally had anything to do with it...)

Not actually sure why I am posting about this - everyone in Australia has already heard the news, and everyone else doesn't care, but I figured this is probably the first and last world cup game we shall ever win - and it gives me a chance to use my victory icon :)

And now I have to go to work... more training today. Fun Fun.

Right - it's 11:15pm, I have to be up to drive back to Canberra at 6:30 tomorrow, and, in a sudden spurt of patriotism, I am up watching the Australia/Japan world cup game. So far - nothing has happened. I remember now why I find soccer/football to be such an incredibly boring sport.

I'm so enthralled by the game, I've been spending my time checking my flist, and I thought this was worth sharing:

TBS has ordered a half-hour pilot, Late Night Buffet, from the Jim Henson Co. that would stage a talk show entirely with puppets talking with human celebrity guests, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

------

This could be interesting... I keep getting images of puppet!Angel as the interviewer. Sadly, he is not a Jim Henson-type muppet, but maybe he could do a stint as a guest interviewer?

Just finished watching another episode of MacGyver, much to [profile] bob_ette's disgust. Ahh, the 80's. So incredibly stylish. The only decade in which you could conceivably have a secret agent called Angus.

Anyway, at one point in the episode, MacGyver says 'With all due respect, Sir...'. It's most disconcerting to get sudden images of Jack O'Neill in the middle of watching MacGyver build a rocket-lauched flying fox.

While watching MacGyver, [livejournal.com profile] bob_ette commented on the dominance of Dean fans in the Supernatural fandom. Which prompted this poll:

[Poll #744864]

Hope that worked - I've never done one of these before. *pokes poll experiementally*

Oh, and for those of you who still haven't seen [livejournal.com profile] dear_dean, I suggest you check it out. But I'm not sure I'd recommend following Dean's advice - at least if you plan on staying out of gaol :)

Yesterday was apparently "Take your Fandom to Work Day". Every time I turned around I was being bludgeoned with fandom references. Think I'm kidding?

It started when I was checking some problems in one of our contracts. To sort things out, I had to use forms SG-1 and SG-2. Which brought a smile to my face, until I actually tried to figure out exactly how I was supposed to fill them in. So, I called the department concerned, and ended up speaking to a lady named Tauri. Luckily, it was over the phone, so she couldn't see my face when she introduced herself.

After sorting out all my Stargate/Contract problems, I had meetings concerning the FMA Act. Which of course translated itself in my mind into Fullmetal Alchemist . Then I went for lunch, down to the cafeteria. Where all the serving people were wearing blue gloves. I had 'two by two, hands of blue' running through my head for my entire break, but everyone survived without major incident.

After lunch was fairly uneventful - the only occurence of my fandoms was someone doing their best Sergant Scultz impersonation - 'I know Nuth-ing'. Some things will never go out of style :)

Anyone else ever have days like this?

Just got a quick question aimed at any UK peeps on my flist - anyone heard of the car rental company 1car1? A workmate is looking at hiring a car from them when she goes overseas, and she's a little nervous about them, since they are asking for payment up front. From what I can see via google, it all looks legit, but ideally she was looking for confirmation from an actual person. What can I say, she's old-fashioned that way :)

Anyway, I said I would throw the question out there, so here it is.

(I've had the urge to call people 'peeps' all day. Not sure why...)

Today is my First Official Sickday. Apparently, I should keep up the great Aussie Sickie tradition of nicking off to the beach, but a) the closest beach is a few hours away, and b) I really don't feel up to it. So I am updating my livejournal instead.

I said a few days ago that I was photoshopping a bunch of reminders for my sister. I'm quiet pleased with how they turned out, and since [profile] bob_ette also wanted to show them off, I thought I'd dump them up here. If nothing else, pictures of the SPN boys can always cheer up your day.

Two more under the cut )

I also made a shiny new icon. *points to icon*

From The Fitz Files, The Sun-Herald, 4/6/06

"The black New York Democrat Charles Rangel was asked on public television what he thought of President Bush, and he replied: "Well, I really think he shatters the myth of white supremacy once and for all..."

I think I just about died laughing.

X 3

Right. I went to see X-men 3 with the gang last night. What a letdown. Not even that it was bad (which it was) but that it was completely forgettable. Like it couldn't even be bothered to try and live up to the first two. Review, my patented ACME Character-Transplant theory, and what I would have liked to see in this movie )

In conclusion, nice special effects, and overall was not a patch on the other two. Phew. I feel better now, having got that off my chest.

After everyone left last night, I watched ep seven of Dr Who (thanks [profile] cloverfizz!), and have to say, it was rather disappointing too. Not bad, just nothing particularly special. Must have been a night for it.

Since I got tagged - 'Write out any (as many as you'd like) plots/story-ideas (from any fandom) that you would LIKE to write, but can't seem to fully realize. You don't have to give away plot points, just a general idea.' )

On the topic of fic, [profile] redbyrd_sgfic has a couple of new-to-the-web fics up. I recommend checking them out, but make sure you have a fair chunk of time free.

This evening has been spent photoshopping some 'reminder' notices for [profile] bob_ette. She says she'll notice them more with Dean and Sam on them, but I think she just wants an excuse to have pictures of the Supernatural boys on the refridgerator. And the bathroom mirror. And the milk. Not that I mind, since it meant I spent the last hour or so staring at a picture of a very nice looking Dean...

I also have a few SG-1 and Dr Who icons in the works. Decided it was about time that I got a Daniel icon :)

Morning

Oy. So, here I am, updating my LJ at 6:40. In the morning. Why? Because I have a meeting at 7:30, and need to be a work in half an hour to get things set up. Who the hell needs to have a meeting at 7:30am!

Goddamn public service.
lyore: (Default)
Ok, so I'm back online. There are many reasons for my absence from the livejournal world, but they mostly involved too many books and DVDs, and the fact that [profile] bob_ette has staged an armed takeover of my internet connection. But she's out at the moment, so I have sole posession - at least until she gets back. This means I've been out of touch with the internet world in general - anything I need to know about?

Anyway, during my little break I have managed to read 10 books (Honor Harrington books by David Weber) and get through all of my new HH dvds, watch the rest of supernatural, and up to episode 4 of Dr Who, so I haven't been completely unproductive :)

All I can say about the Supernatural is... )

This has been an expensive weekend so far, and it is only half-way done. I bought 2 pairs of gloves, and this stole-y type thing. And season one of Dr Who, so all those who were interested in seeing the Captain Jack goodness, I can now oblige. This is (yet another) down side of hating my work - I comfort shop. Oh well, at least it was stuff I needed. And yes, Dr Who does count amoung life's necessities.

Bitching about work - you probably don't want to read this )

I have a few other odds and sods I want to share with people, (including the crazyest patent application I have ever seen, featuring special guest appearances by the Androids of the Grey Aliens) but that may have to wait until I remember to forward myself the emails.

Also, I love Bayside. My new fave band (for the next week or so, anyway).
lyore: (Default)
Right. Internet connection is fixed (aparently something was wrong with the modem settings, or something), and I'm back online *is happy* I'm trying to catch up on the flist, and comments, etc, but it may take a while.

Just finished watching Supernatural - the guys are even hotter when they are getting beaten up. Sad, but true. Tonights ep had that Meg character doing her 'Brigitte-from-Pretender' impression (or was I the only one who thought that?). Seems like things have started ramping up to the end-of-season arc - looking good so far.

Trip to Sydney went well, and was surprisingly cheap, thanks to my amazing display of willpower. No matter how cool the Boba Fett figurine was, I do NOT need another SW figurine, (unless it's DV, and then all bets are off). Unfortunately, said trip means that I have started this week even more tired than usual. Only four more days until the weekend...

Apart from that, not much has been happening in my (exceedingly boring) life. Work is better, now I have a CD of eBooks to occupy my time. To give you some idea of the busy-ness of my work, I'm getting through about one novel a day. 12 point font, A4 size, 250+ pages novels. Granted, I read fast, but still... oh well, they pay me whether I work or not, I guess. And I got a glowing probation report - that's the public service for you :)

Plan for the rest of the night = Shower, then bed, I think. I have an urge to read Buffy fanfic, but I don't think I can stay awake that long. We'll see, I guess.

1. The amazon stuff arrived today. Apparently they heard all the mental cursing and shouting.

2. My internet is down. This update is brought to you courtesy of [profile] cloverfizz who has kindly let me borrow her internet connection. This means my presence online will be sproadic at best.

3. Saw the FMA movie. Meh - not too bad. Not as good as the series.

Now my lift is going to bed, so I need to leave.
lyore: (Default)
OK guys, I need to know if anyone has tried to contact Amazon.com recently. I've got an order that's more than 2 weeks overdue (from the latest estimated date), and when I try and send them an email through their 'Contact Us' form, it keeps saying something along the lines of 'fix the area indicated below', and refusing to send.

Only problem is, there AREN'T any areas indicated below, and not matter what I do, it keeps saying the SAME DAMN THING. I've tried it on the work computers as well (which are Windows machines, using IE), so I don't think it's a browser/mac problem. Am I just missing something incredibly obvious? Has this happened to anyone else?

This form seems to be the only way to contact them, since the 'Leave a number and we'll call you' thing doesn't work for anyone outside America. Since this is Amazon, they don't have a customer service number. I did find a few numbers on the net, but frankly, given that this would be a rather expensive, and almost certainly very long, international call, I'm wondering if I should just cut my losses.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Needless to say, unless this order miraculously turns up overnight, it's doubtful I'll be ordering from Amazon again any time soon :(

FMA

Finally got to the end of FMA (the series, not the movie). All I have to say is... wtf? ) I don't dislike the ending, it's strangely fitting, but still - that one came from left field.

OK, spent Saturday at [personal profile] necromage and [profile] pseudoskribe's place, with the rest of the gang. Mage played KH2 (awesome graphics) and I spent the day making icons.

01. 02. 03.

The rest are under here )

Phew. Got that lot out of the way

This is my hundredth entry. Plus, as of this moment, I have posted 666 comments. Huh.
