First of all Original Original Star Wars on DVD! Is it a coincidence that this was announced on SW day? :) (Well, OK, it actually got posted yesterday, but I found out today, so it still counts.) Thanks to [profile] spitefairy for the head's up.

I now have all the released episodes of (new) Dr Who, thanks to [profile] go_the_brumbies. And I'm up to episode 41 of FMA - did I mention I was really loving this show? Only 10 more to go... You'll get thoughts on the whole thing when I'm done.

I would also like to say the the SPN fandom has the politest, most considerate wank around. Which, considering the subject matter of said debate, is rather surprising. It makes me feel that there is hope for fandom at large.

I tried to buy Advent Children yesterday (yeah, cause I need more DVDs to watch :P), but JB, the only place that was open, didn't have the cool metal case I want, and Ezy DVD does. I'll head over there after work tomorrow, and then I really need to stop spending money. Except apparently there's a Stormtrooper version of Mr Potato Head (Tater Trooper!), which I want too... Not to mention, Darth Maul's Lightsabre (force effects version) but I think that may be a little out of my price range :(

'Part from that, life has been very boring. Go to work, do nothing, come home, watch something, go to bed. *sigh*

Right. Off to watch more FMA before bed.

Happy Star Wars Day!

*yawn* I have to be up in less than 12 hours... ugh.

Mondays

I hate Mondays. I really, really do.

Except for Supernatural, which was actually on this week. Yay! But jeez, Channel 10 is pissing me off. Last week, no Supernatural. This week, no SVU, so they could show the latest reality TV special. Tonight, Supernatural 20 minutes late, because of Big Brother. When it finally started, we got the bottom banners flashing up, advertising, you guessed it, Big Brother. Just... no. That show is annoying at the best of times, the least they could do is keep it safely contained in it's own timeslot, and stop the toxic stupidity infecting everything else.

I have a new plan. [profile] bob_ette is currently on a boycotting big business kick, and I think I may join her. Except I'll boycott everything that advertises during the parts of Big Brother which run into Supernatural time. Sounds like a plan to me.

Anyway, up to episode 25 of FMA. Good Stuff.

Right. So, I promised [profile] cloverfizz a list of ships for my shows, since we decided this topic was getting outside of worksafe boundaries. Except, since this is me, Gen-Girl extraordinaire, it's more a list of ships-I-don't-despise. Anyway, for those new to my lj, this may be enlightening. In no particular order )

Right. Pretty sure I missed some, but that should give people a general idea of what I read (and what fandoms) when I can't find gen.

Also, my phone? Psychotically happy. It's kinda scary. I want a new one.

Look! A header! And all it cost was twenty minutes on photoshop, 5 minutes figuring out the customisation thingy, thanks to a handy-dandy tutorial, and $25US. Yeah, that's right, I finally bit the bullet and bought a paid account. Figured the amount of time I spend on here, I probably should - and besides, I wanted more icon space. And a cool header (go check it out!)

During my morning's perusal of lj and other internet-type places, I found this link. It's an audio interview praising fanficion, but using the dubious example of Lori Jareo to do it. Blurb is under here )

Ok, I'm glad they like fanfic, it's nice to get some positive press for a change, but you think you could not praise the person who broke just about every unwritten fanfic rule there is? I thought it was an interesting article, mostly because they are praising fanfic writers for their dedication, and I get the feeling that they are just using the Jareo thing as an excuse to talk about fanfic, but still...

Remember a day or so ago, when I was saying I had all this stuff to watch? It just got worse. I went round to [profile] cloverfizz's place yesterday, and came back with the full series of Full Metal Alchemist. So far, I've only seen the first 9 episodes, but it's so cute, even with the random anime style things. Cut for anyone who hasn't seen it and wants too )

So yeah, if I've completely dropped out of sight in RL, it's only because I'm buried in a pile of DVDs. Feel free to come and join me, anytime :)

On other news, [profile] bob_ette just walked out of her bedroom, looking like a cockatoo. Seriously, any rooster would be proud of that comb :P

Well, people said they were interested, so here it is. Concrit is welcome, but since I'm new to this writing business, gentle is good, but honest is better. Please, let me know what you like, what you don't like about it, whether I should give up and never touch a keyboard again.

Obligatory Header-type stuff:

Title: Worst
Pairing: N/A
Warnings: Set after the BDM, so be warned.
Other stuff: Very short, kinda sad. Zoe-centric.

Here be the fic )

Dr Who!

Wohoo! Thanks to a wonderful workmate, I have the Christmas Invasion. Now all I have to do is find time to watch it... (And yes, I realise that still puts me at least two episodes behind the UK *sigh*)

I also bought the first season of Babylon 5 today, from the second hand store. I really have no idea what it's about, but I've heard very good things. And I have a borrowed copy of the first season of Andromeda, not to mention the rest of MacGyver to watch. So many DVDs, so little time.

What do you think of the proposed BSG spinoff? )

I'm cautiously hopeful, if it goes ahead. Even if the timeline looks a little dodgy.

Coupla questions for you:

1. Anyone know the ancient greek translation for 'awake'? So far, we've found 'egeiro' and 'gregoreuo' - Any ancient Greek scholars out there who want to offer any alternatives or opinions?

2. Purely hypothetical question - If I happened to have possibly, maybe written some Firefly fanfic, (very short, post-Serenity), would anyone want to read it?

Random Observation of the Day - Terry Nation, creator of the Daleks, was the Producer for MacGyver

You know, it seems I'm the opposite of most lj people. I write a lot more during the week than on the weekend. Actually, mostly that was to do with the fact that this extended weekend has been rather busy )

Unfortunately, despite the fact that the last few days have been filled with goodness, I've been feeling kinda.. I dunno, blah lately. Therefore the silence - to try and avoid infecting my livejournal with my blah-ness like I have my RL friends.

But enough boring stuff. I did indulge in a bit of retail therapy - now I have the first season of MacGyver:) RDA was definite one of those guys who got cuter as he got older, IMO. But anyway, the bad 80's acting (and hair) the stupid!science, the voiceovers and the HGtG - classic. But be warned - you will never get the theme music out of your head. I've been humming it for the last few days.

And I always love watching clip-style credits of the first season of TV shows. You know, when all you've watched so far is the pilot episode and the teaser of the next, and yet you've already seen half the clips in the credits? Yeah.

I'm gradually getting sucked into the supernatural fandom, and I was wondering if anyone has any good SPN gen links? From what I've seen, if I want to find fics in this fandom I'm going to have to get over my adversion to most pairing fics. Life's so tough when you are a gen fan - especially when you are a gen fan trying to avoid spoilers :) And what I'd love to see is an Angel or Buffy crossover - anyone?

On a completely different note - some anti-war and ANZAC day musings )

Ok, I think it's time to end this before it gets any more rambly. Definitely time for some food - I'm starting to get light-headed here. Hmmm... food...
lyore: (Default)
Made the mistake of wandering around some icon-making type places yesterday, and got all depressed at my lack of icon making ability. But then I figured, the only way to get better was to keep going, and since I feel guilty spending time making them and then not using them (I know - my brain is weird, but somehow, posting them on my lj is sufficient justification for it), I figured I'd put the next lot up anyway. Besides, some of these I'm actually moderately happy with.

So here goes - Supernatural, Battlestar Galatica, Bad Taste Bears, and a few odds and sods. Yes, I have eclectic tastes.

here be icons )

Also, does anyone know of any good Star Wars discussion comms?
lyore: (Default)
You know, it's weird how I look for different things in different fandoms. Am I the only one who does this?

I mean, I'm into the Stargate SG-1 fandom purely for the fic, but I'm a sucker for Star Wars meta (although well written (OT, gen) fic is always good). Harry Potter was about half-and-half meta and fic, back when I was a big-time fan. Dr Who is great for the general squee! ness, but I don't really want to read fic for it, and Supernatural is all about the visual candy (OK, partly this is out of an attempt to stay unspoiled).

Thinking about it, I guess it mostly has to do with the way I relate to the source material. Stargate, for instance - Don't get me wrong, I love that show to pieces, but for it's potential, as well as what it is. When you combine the gaping plot holes, the inconsistent characterisation and character development, and the complete lack of resolution to most of the episodes, it's crying out for decent fanfic to fill in the gaps. Whereas Star Wars, prequels and all, doesn't have that feeling of incompleteness to me. I still love good 'missing moment' fics, but I don't really need them to get a sense of what the movies are saying (OK, maybe for the prequels...). On the other hand, I will go hunting for good meta concerning any of the characters, even the ones I don't particularly like, just to see other peoples interpretations.

I don't even know if that makes sense, but it's after midnight, and I have to be up in 6 hours.
lyore: (Default)
Spent the majority of my time at work today trying to explain the concept of Mary Sues to people with little or no fandom experience, via email. Was probably the most interesting conversation I've had at work. I did back away from addressing the question of slash, though.

As promised, some Star Wars media for you. Icons and Wallpapers, Clone Wars and OT based.

The Icons )

The Wallpapers )

You were going to get some Supernatural and Battlestar Icons (points at userpic), but I think this post is about to sink under the weight of the images, so I'll put them up tomorrow.
lyore: (Default)
Say what you will about christians, you gotta love Easter. 4 day weekend, and chocolate to boot.

To celebrate the end of the weekend, I bring you... Wallpapers. It's not chocolate, but it's the best I can do, over the internet.

Because I have yet to figure out how to do the small-image-linking-to-large-image thing, and I am still labouring under the deulsion that someone may want to use these, the full size images are under the cut. But because I don't want to overload people's internet connection, I've split these up into two posts. First up - Supernatural (Dean - 1280x854), Stargate (Sam as Repli-carter-1280x854), Dark Crystal (1024x768) and V for Vendetta (1280x854). If anyone wants different resolutions, let me know, and I'll see what I can do.

Edit - Think I've fixed the size thing now. Seems that when photobucket decided to increase the max file size, it decreased mine. *sigh* Fingers crossed.

Warning - image heavy. But click anyway, you know you want too...  )

As always, opinions welcomed. Think they suck? Let me know. Think they don't suck? Let me know that too.

Star Wars wallpapers and miscellaneous icons coming tomorrow - photobucket seems to be currently unhappy with me.

So, I've just spent the last 2 days wasting my time and taxpayers money at a completely useless training course. The one worthwhile moment of the entire thing came after we had retired to the hotel bar after the end of the course, in the form of an acedote from one of my fellow graduates. (Context: we had been discussing the tendency of our bosses to give us any random job they happen to think of, without considering whether or not we have any idea how to do it)

"It could be worse. My brother's a doctor, and one day he mentioned to his lecturer he was worrying about what would happen if someone asked him to do something he had know idea how to do, or surgery he had never tried before. His lecturer turned to him and said: "Just do it. Confidence = Competence."

You know, this explains a lot about the medical profession :) At least in the public service, we just go by "Bullshit baffles brains".

I want new Stargate stories. Even more, I want new team-but-slightly-Daniel-and-Jack-centric GEN stories. Is that too much to ask?
lyore: (Default)
Well, the housemate left today. Basically, this means 1) no more yummy food :( and 2) more Internet time for me :) It's weird - I've probably had about a week total alone in this place. Still, I'm being invaded by the raving hordes on thursday, so I won't have much time to get used to it.

As far as real life goes, despite the fact that it is showing an amazing ability to limit my online activities, nothing much is happening. Well, my friends seem to be having a pretty eventful time, but me? Not so much. This is probably a good thing, when I think about it.

Thoughts on V for Vendetta )

Double episode of Supernatural tonight. Or not, since the second one was a repeat. Stupid channel ten. Still, they are partially forgiven, because the new episode had Darla in it. In an ironically similar situation to one she ended up in on Angel, so I spent the episode going "No, don't worry, she can just go to LA and hook up with Angel/Lindsay, and it'll be all good." Guess I kind of missed the poignancy there :)

Random Observation of the Day - You just can't see the Operative the same way when you've heard him singing "I want to be Evil"

OK, well if I'm going to continue on this icon making kick, I'd better start one of these.

Without further ado )

I am a bad, bad person. But at least now I am a bad, bad person with a pair of Oakleys. A poor bad, bad person. (And it was $50 off!)

Anyway, before I went on an unscheduled shopping spree, I was on a tour of the War Memorial. I'd forgotten how much difference a good guide makes. I am normally not a museum/gallery type person, pictures and objects and dioramas generally leave me cold.

But once you have someone there telling stories, I could stay there for hours. The stories varied from the tragic - the story of the youngest Australian even killed in action (14yrs, 9 months) - to the amusing - stories of the Aussies climbing the pyramids to carve their initials in the top and smuggling assorted Australian wildlife like Kangaroos, wallabys, and emus into Egypt. (Apparently, by the end of the war the Cairo zoo had the largest collection of australian animals outside Oz.)

But this one I had to share. War Stories )

Anyway, if any of you find yourselves at the AWM, I definitely recommend getting the guided tour.

I have broadband! Wohoo!

Well, love to stay and chat, but I'm off to find things to download.
lyore: (Default)
Well, I was going to remain silent tonight and spare you all my bad mood (due mostly to tiredness and the fact that my broadband is SUPPOSED to be working and yet is NOT), but then I saw this in the Daily Snitch and had to share.

Oldman back for OotP

Well, it doesn't quite fix my bad mood, but it's a start :P

Hello, people *waves madly to all her new friends*

In honour of all the new people on my flist, I feel like I should say something profound, or at least Star Wars-focused.

....

Nope, nothing's coming to me. Sorry.

In fact, I really have nothing at all interesting to say, I just figured I should say hi to everyone. But I will share the random musing which has been bugging me for the last few days - Why do all Sci-Fi swear words start with 'f'? )

Also, good luck to all the people on my flist who have job interviews in the next few days. Reading through, it's been like an epidemic of potential employment (but in a good way, of course). Hmmm... hopefully none of them are going for the same job. But anyway, Good Luck, all!

RL note - for those of you who haven't got the email about the housewarming, let me know.

(This update proudly brought to you by the letter 'F')

Happy Birthday to [profile] cloverfizz!

You know, there are times when I love living in Canberra. And Canberra Day is definitely on top of the list. Ahh, extra public holidays for us...

Of course, the downside of this is that tuesday is Harmony Day. And we can all guess how the Harmonians are reacting to this *sigh* People should really stop encouraging them. On the other hand, monday is also Navy day. Perhaps we could crash a Seahawk on them?

Speaking of Canberra, I also love the way that everyone here expects the NSW to sneak across the border and try and steal their stuff. You can't even join the video store without proof that you live in the ACT, instead of, say Queenbeyan. The fact that Woden is closer to Queebeyan than a hell of a lot of the rest of the ACT doesn't matter to them. No, NSW is just filled with devious Video!Ninjas, bent on borrowing all the DVD's in the ACT as part of their Plot for World Domination. First Blockbuster's and Tomorrow The World!

Actually, now that I think about it, the fact that Harmony day is being promoted in Canberra is making a lot more sense. The Canberrans can be all paranoid and whine about persecuted by the New South Welshmen and to a lesser extent the rest of Australia, and the Harmonians can be all paranoid and whine about being persecuted by the Herons, JKR, and the sane portion of fandom.

But hey, 3 day weekend *shrug*
lyore: (Default)
Firstly, [profile] bob_ette now has a livejournal. Go say hi :) Oh, and for the Battlestar fans reading this, I recommend checking out [profile] cloverfizz's icons. Some very nice stuff. I am both jealous and inspired, which may be a dangerous combination.

Real life update )
And now, on to the interesting stuff. Or not.

For [personal profile] necromage, Timothy Zahn talks bout "Outbound Flight" here. I will get around to reading it soon, I promise :)

Possible flashy icons )

Les Mis - Now with added Zombies )

On the Sci-fi front, now have all of Stargate SG-1, up to and including Season 8. My budget is glad, because this is one less series for me to impulse-buy.

And this is getting rather long, so I think I may stop now.

Random Observation of the Day - Valjean is a tenor. A TENOR, I tell you!
