Mornings

I hate mornings. And since I happen to be thinking this at 5:15 in the evening, you can tell I really hate mornings. Have I whinged about how incredibly I have to get up yet?

Work is currently consisting of me reading contracts, which is great fun. I'm sure I applied for this job as an Engineer, not a Lawyer :(

Err... I have nothing to say. Lately, whenever I get on the internet, my mind goes blank and I can't think of any of the multiple things I need to check/do/say. I want my broadband *pouts*

On other news, I should be getting the rest of my stuff delivered on wednesday. Which would be good in and of itself, but it also means I get the day off. Yay for sleeping in!

Bought some boots and a bag. Very cool. And now I shall go back to scanning.

That is all.
lyore: (Default)
Well, I've survived my first week of work. Go me. Granted, 4 of the 5 days were induction and training, but still. 1 week done, 40 odd years to go... The early mornings are already killing me.

Work-type stuff )

Still trying to get internet access at the apartment. At least I've started to sort out who DOESN'T offer broadband in my suburb. Everyone else are basically being complete pains - all I need to know is availability and price, is that so bloody hard?!

But, having nothing else to do, I've made lots of icons, which may be shared at some point.

Ok, finally some interesting stuff. For the Pretender fans amoung you, a link to the producers of the series discussing (amoung other things) Micheal T. Wiess' hair. Video files linked from this page - http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=5080

Yes, so. Think I will end this before everything gets even more incoherent.

Heading back to civilisation tomorrow. Which, unfortunatly, means no internet for the forseeable future, barring what I can bludge off my friends ([profile] psuedoskribe, [personal profile] necromage, I'm looking at you).

It also means I'm leaving the airconditioning. *sigh*

And finally moving out of home. Which feels odd.

I have goodies for people today.

First, an interview with the Mythbusters talking about Star Wars. After discovering that Adam worked on the Prequels too, I now adore him more than ever. My opinion of the movies just increased, too :) Link is here. But, for those like me, who find that the official Star Wars site is about the slowest site in existance, the full text is below the cut.

Mythbusters talk Star Wars )

Secondly, I have a few more icons. Not many - my sisters put in requests for wallpapers, so I've been filling those first :) They may or may not be posted up here, depending if I decide that a) they are fit for public consumption and b) anyone else would be interested. For the icons with different version, I'd appreciate if people would let me know which one they prefer, so I can figure out what works best.

Here be icons )

Only four days til I leave home for good. Unfortunately, some pretty awful shit has happened round here, and I really wish I wasn't going right now. Not that me being here will make any difference, but *shrugs*. The timing could have been better.

Last day

Jan. 26th, 2006 01:37 am
lyore: (Default)
Yeah, so everyone remembers that I work in an Abattoir over the summer, right? Well, today was my last day. Which, as it turned out, was probably a very good thing, because if it hadn't already been my last day, I think I would have quit.

The entire day was a complete mess, and I spent most of it either a) trying to fix other people's mistakes or b) being blamed for other people's mistakes. Combine that with machine breakdowns (my machine, of course), dealing with the general incompetence of all the new staff (which is totally not their fault, but I am getting pissed that not only are they not being trained, what they ARE being taught is wrong), the new assistant foreman (no clue), and new QA (no clue, but that doesn't stop her from being an interfering pain-in-the-ass), a cold and a killer headache, and I think I officially had my worst day at work ever. Everybody seemed to have decided that today was the the day to go blame the girl on the colour codes, ignoring the fact that what they were whinging about was either completely out of my control, or something I was told to do by the assistant boss or QA or both. It was not a fun day, did I mention that?

On the plus side, when the Boss and the boss QA realised how upset I was (this may have something to do with the fact I finished the night in tears - very embarrassing, I don't recommend it), the Boss was really nice to me, and made a point of telling me what a great/wonderful/amazing employee I was, and how there was no way the people giving me shit would have been able to do my job. OK, I'm sure most of it wasn't all that sincere, but it was nice anyway. And then when I got home, I found Bob/ette had left a nice note on my pillow, so that was good.

Oh, and they didn't pay me for my overtime. Which is kinda ironic - the pay office is finishing the way they started, by screwing me around. *sigh*

Ok, so that's enough wallowing, I'm gonna go find something good to read before I go to bed.

RL - I know what Wolfy did this summer )

While waiting for the guests to arrive, I decided to play with photoshop. Feeling moderately proud of myself, I then wanted to share the fruits of my labour on lj, which required me to learn how to stick pictures in a post. I think I have it sorted - I guess we'll find out :) Therefore, this entry will be a work in progress for the next few minutes (hours) until I figure out what I am doing. Be gentle with me - it's my first time :)

Photoshop Madness - Star Wars and Buffy (Giles) icons. And a wallpaper. )

Did that work? And can anyone tell me if I can make the wallpaper show up smaller?

Random Observation of the Day - I like photoshop.

Wow. Anyone seen this yet? Group of fans want to raise enough money to pay for a new series of Firefly, by taking donations. Their goal? $24 million. That's almost as much as the Americal domestic gross of Serenity (and, oh, 20 times the Australian). One thinks they may be being a tad optimistic.

http://www.browncoatsriseagain.com/

Current total - $840

At least the money will go to charity, when they don't meet the target/the idea gets blown out of the water.

Random Observation of the Day - Lindsay Crouse was in the first season of Alias. Playing a paranormal FBI agent-type. Now we know where Maggie Walsh got her training :)
lyore: (Default)
Hey, people, seen this yet? The new American law which has made 'annoying' someone on the internet ILLEGAL.

Create an e-annoyance, go to jail )
Wow - anyone else wondering how on earth they are going to enforce this?

On other news - the airconditioner is working. Wohoo!! Actually, it is now working at the same sun-standard rate it was when we originally brought the people in to try and fix it, but at least it is running. Yay, the coolness!

And, thanks to one of the morons at working screwing up, I spent the first hour of work carrying a grand total of 1.8 tonnes of meat from one side of the boning room to the other. Who needs a gym, huh?

TV news - anxiously awaiting the new Stargate/BSG, when I either manage to download it, or get someone else to download it for me. A friend at work lent me season 1 of alias, so that'll be my viewing for the next week or so.

Random Observation of the Day - Life is so much better at a cool 24 degrees celsius.

1 week down, 3 to go...

Wondering how to protect yourself from psychotic killer robots? Then this is essential reading Because we all know the robot rebellion is coming
I wonder if any of those tricks would work on Daleks?

I am going to miss my subscription to New Scientist, but I really can't afford it at the moment. Not to mention that they still haven't changed my address since the last time I moved, despite numerous requests from me. Ah well, that's what a newsagent is for, I guess.

Random Observation of the Day - The airconditioner is still not fixed. NOT HAPPY, JAN.
lyore: (Default)
Have to go to work tomorrow. Ughh. At least it'll be cool, I guess.

Been watching the Hornblower DVD's I bought my Dad for Christmas. Been I long time since I thought about that series - really liking it. It joins Lord of the Rings as one of the few movies/series I prefer to the original books. Unlike my less-than-love for the LotR books (which has everything to do with writing style), I think that the movies made the character of Hornblower a lot more accessible to the audience (plus, you know, more Archie, which is always good). I find Hornblower an interesting character in general - the contrast between his personal sense of honour and the more underhanded tactics he is willing take in warfare, such as sailing under false colours. Add in a superb cast, and I'm sold.

Must get around to getting my own copy, eventually. Oh, the brokeness of my life, which unfortunately does not look to improve with the new job, thanks to the rent. Ah well, such is life.

Oh, and our town had riots this weekend. Even made the national news. We're famous - go my town! (Hey [personal profile] wolfwarrior, still coming to visit?) The way the cops had their own little setup - all chairs set out under a tent, complete with a stand for refreshments, made it look rather like a party. Which reminds me that I still haven't posted the picture of the town christmas tree, but that will have to wait until I get it off my father's computer.

Random Observation of the Day - Why can I sleep all day, but never at night? Employment really needs a 'nocturnal ' option.
lyore: (Default)
Happy New Year! And all that jazz.

Status Report:

Airconditioner = Still not fixed
Temperature = Still above 40
Lyore = Still not happy

New Years Resolution = To keep track of the books I read this year. Why? Because, slob that I am, I can be scarily methodical about things when I care to be. We'll see how it goes.

I'm also planning to kidnapped the actor who played Father Christmas/Santa in Narnia (Mmmm - Jedi!Aslan) to be Dumbledore in the next Harry Potter movies. I don't care if he's not English.

Stargate Action Figures )

Random Observation of the Day - Exactly how DO you do glasses on an action figure anyway? Detachable ones really wouldn't work (at the very least, they'd fall off two seconds after you pulled the figure out of the box, if you ever managed to fit them on the face in the first place), and drawing them on would be, well, just plain wrong. Any ideas/examples?
lyore: (Default)
Hope everyone had a merry christmas/happy holidays, or in general just a damn good time. Santa (and the rels) was good to me this year - in addition to all the kitchen stuff I knew I was getting, I also got seasons 5-7 of Stargate (only 4 and 8 to go!), and the new Star Wars visual dictionary. Also 5 tea towels and 2 pot holders. Apparently people think I a) cook and b) cook messily. They might be right on the second, anyway.

On the other hand, I've had little time to keep up with all the lj-goings on, so if I haven't been commenting, that is why.

Hmmphh. The airconditioning is broken, has been since the friday before christmas. It's been 40 degrees celsius here. Not happy. May be getting fixed tomorrow, in which case I shall be very happy. This also, in an indirect way, accounts for the incoherency of this update - the heat has been playing havoc with my sleeping patterns, and I'm now in a state of permanent dazed tiredness.

In an effort to avoid the heat, my sisters and I drove for 2 and a half hours to another town, primarily to go shopping. While there I bought this book - 'Is history fiction?'. Looks pretty interesting, but the best bit? When I checked the publishing date to get an idea of how new the thing was, it says 'first published 2006'. Huh. Guess my book can time travel. Which then makes one think - If my book can time travel, doesn't that mean it should be able to get a first hand experience of all the historical events debated?

If I could go back in time, I'd stop myself from listening to the Star Wars musical. I listened to it once, almost two weeks ago, and it's still stuck in my head. Listening again now... hopefully this will help. Damn catchy tunes :)

Random observation of the day - I just want to give Adam Gilchrist a great big hug. His luck has to change sometime. But yay for Symonds!
lyore: (Default)
Well, after a (relatively) brief hiatus, Lyore is back to tell you that she is officially graduated. Go me!
Extra, Extra, Read all about it! )

And lots of Congratulations to Pharaoh, who got a University Medal. Yay you!

On other news - finally got round to downloading the star wars musical. Very funny - mostly because of the juxtapositioning of the lyrics with the composition. It's been stuck in my head all week. Also watched the first 4 episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion - shows promise. Had to laugh at the piracy warning though - it threatens you with the International Crime Police (Interpol). As opposed to what, the International Hair Police? :)

Only 3 more days of work, then I get 10 days off. Hopefully will update more in that time.

Random Observation of the Day - No matter what the Other Sister may say, Nirvana does NOT sound like Robbie Williams

Well, it's official. I can graduate. Got the results today - three distinctions and a high distinction. Pretty cool. I am a little annoyed that I was only two marks off getting a HD for my thesis. Oh well, it's all good.

So, I'm graduating with 2A honours - which is what I was hoping for, means I have a distinction average. Considering I don't actually know anyone with a HD average in Engineering, I think this is ok.

Yay!. Will Graduate! Will have Job! Will get money! Live in cool Apartment!

And now I have to go to the stupid temporary job. It isn't temporary enough to suit me.

And I hope everyone else did well/OK/passed - whatever you were hoping for.

I love the drought. Just because the Farmer's are all going broke and no-one will be able to grow/raise any food, there is no reason not to appreciate the good side of the drought. Namely, No Kill Days (because of the lack of sheep).

Which is why I am stretched out on my bed updating this, rather than lugging around bits of meat. We can all guess which I prefer. I'm more than usually annoyed with work anyway - they forgot to pay me. Completely. Not just underpaid, but totally neglected to pay me anything. This is not a job anyone does for the fun of it, people. Take my word for it. And it probably won't be fixed until next pay, which is even more of a pain. Oh well, such is life.

In honour of the No Kill day, I decided not to kill anything all day. All those annoying insects, bugs and flys got a free pass - for one day only.

Other random things about today - When I got up, my Dad was watching 'Murder she wrote'. I sat down on the lounge, and wasn't really paying attention, but then guess who I saw? Ben Browder. Only for a few shots, about 10 seconds total, but he was there. My dad had no clue who he was, but that is because he is completely uneducated in the ways of Farscape.

Couple of questions for you guys - One, how do you pronounce Anastasia? And two, does anyone know who the deputy Prime Minister of Australia is (without looking it up)? I'm drawing a blank and so are the 'rents.

So yes. This post had absolutely no point, except to gloat about the fact that I didn't have to work today.
lyore: (Default)
Ahah! Just when you'd thought I'd gone home and forgotten you all, it's an update!

First things first - I have an apartment for next year. Well, strictly speaking, my parent's have an apartment, which I shall rent. And if you want to be really accurate, it's not actually their's yet, since they still have to do all the exchanging contracts and stuff. But they've paid the deposit, which is good enough for me.

It's so lovely. Very high ceilings - probably 12 foot. And fully furnished, which is cool, since I own nothing. And, to make [personal profile] wolfwarrior happy, it's on her side of town. Sounds like it is fairly close to [profile] __happy__'s place. Words do not do its wonderfulness justice.

On to other news - work sucks. As usual. To make matters worse, there is a whole heap of chicks working there at the moment, and they've run out of lockers. Grrghh.

But since I'm only working 4 days a week, I had yesterday off. So I decided to go the gym - yes, stop laughing, I can hear you from here. I had a free pass thingy they gave mean when I said I was thinking of joining them.

So I went to this class, which I was told was all punching, kicking and hitting people with sticks. That would have been good - it's been far too long since I've got to hit somebody properly - the sisters don't count. Unfortunately, the instructors had changed since the chick I was talking to had done it. And the new lady made it into aerobics with a stick. Which was OK, but not really what I was looking for. Then I was talking to the receptionist/manager person, and she said stick around for the pilates class. So I did.

I was suprised - it wasn't too bad. Except that the instructor kept getting parallel and perpendicular mixed up, which I found both confusing and amusing. Oh, and she kept saying 'Activate the core', and 'Activate the transverse abdominus', and 'Activate the buttocks'. By the end, I was just picturing a bunch of little, fluorescent cartoon muscles, holding up big swords and yelling 'Core, ACTIVATE!', before running off to battle evil and/or sloppy muscle control.

Note to self - it's a lot easier to do pilates when you aren't trying desperately to stop snickering. Or at least, to not snicker out loud.

Oh and for those interested - the entire cast of SG-1 have signed on for the next season. And Claudia Black is back as a regular. This could either be very good or very bad. I liked Vala, but hopefully she'll tone it down just a little.

*sigh* Work now. I hate work.

Random Observation of the Day - This is the second time I'v tried to update this. Stupid intenet connnection.
lyore: (Default)
It's 12:30 am, and all you can hear throughout the building is the sound of packing tape and heavy boxes being lugged down stairwells. Ahh, the end of year exodus. Good to know that I'm not the only one who's gonna be up all night.

EDIT - I have come to the conclusion that I own way, way too many books. The sad thing - I actually cut down the number of books I brought to uni this year. *sigh*

Uggh. Just thought I should let people know that I am now officially leaving the land of the fast internet connection. When you combine this with the new job, it seems I may be scarce around here for a while. Not sure - depends how things work out.

Broadband - the only thing I will miss about uni.

I believe I promised people thoughts on Clone Wars. Well, here they are.

First off, I believe I mentioned these cartoons are absolutely hilarious? Well, they are. The plot, the drawings, the occasional dialogue - all bloody funny. Generally I think the whole EU thing was a mistake (apart from the first Zahn trilogy, where I can actually recognise the characters), but this I liked. It's even better when watching with other hyper Star Wars fans.

Not only was the entire thing one of the funniest things I have seen in years, it also introduces one of the coolest characters in the Star Wars Universe - ARC Red Commander guy. It's a damn shame that a character so cool has no name (well, not that I can find - if he has one, let me know).

Did I mention this guy was cool - two blasters at once, a bid-arse gun-thingy, and a SKIRT. You know you are a macho, butch Stormtrooper commando when you can wear (and fight) in a skirt. And this guy wears his skirt while holding off armies, and displaying agility and reflexes which would put a Jedi to shame. Not to mention that the whole group of them painted the front of their troop carrier.

This guy needs his own fanclub. Who's in?

Why Obi-Wan/ARC Red Commander is my new OTP )

Unfortunately, due to studio interference (either due to pressure from GL or fear of antagonising thousands of rabid Anakin/Obi-wan shippers) Red Commander's screen time was drastically cut in the second volume. *sigh* He does make a few brief appearances, being kick-arse as usual, clubbing the oncoming droid armies with his massive macho gun.

Love it.

Random Observation of the Day: Subtext - It's everywhere! GET IT OFF ME!!!

Edit - It occurs to me now, that in a past life, I may have been a Harmonian...
lyore: (Default)
Well, you were going to get a wonderful post about the Clone Wars cartoons. Instead, you get this. Blame the morons trying to promote Intelligent Design in Australia. NOT HAPPY, JAN.

Intelligent Design in Australia )
If they start teaching this, I'm gonna go set up my own country. Actually, I'm gonna go research the creation myths of other religions, turn them into a pseudo-scientific theory, and then sue the States if they don't teach 'em. Yeah.

But all hope is not lost. Yay for the Greens! )

So glad I voted for the Greens.

I can't believe this is being taught in schools. But I really hope everyone who answers biology questions in this year's HSC based on Intelligent Design fails. Miserably.

OK, just to clarify - I have no problem with the assumption that God created the world, human-kind and the Backstreet Boys, since I tend to lean in this direction myself (sometimes - it depends a lot on my mood). However, I do have a problem with the idea that there is "a hole in evolution theory", and the idea that Intelligent design is a scientific theory.

Words cannot describe how annoyed I am right now.

Random Observation of the Day - I had a hard time chosing a mood for this entry. So consider it a mix of - aggravated, nauseated, infuriated and sad. But in the end, I had to go with plain old Pissed Off.
