Yes, folks, you heard that right. My brand new shiny less-than-one-month-old ipod is DEAD. *wails*

The Saga of Lyore's iPod - (Cut because most of the RL friends have already heard this story) )
On the other hand, the rest of the day has been decidedly better. Caught up with lot of people, and said goodbyes before everyone scatters for the holidays.

Oh, and I got Revenge of the Sith over the weekend. Expect some deep and meaningful thoughts on it, when I get a) enough sleep, and b) enough time to write them down. I also got volume one of the Clone Wars. I don't think I've ever laughed so hard in my life. Watch it. Now. I have the next 5 episode sitting here on my computer, waiting to be watched. I think I should do that now, in fact.

Random Observation of the Day - Some days, it just doesn't pay to get out of bed. But then you get more Clone Wars, and then it does :)

Exam is over! Yay! No more exams. Ever. Well, for the foreseeable future. Hopefully (touch wood).

Thanks for all the 'good lucks' guys. They may have worked, because the exam was only moderately bad. Still extremely boring - I spend half the time sitting there being to bored to answer the questions. Probably not the best exam technique ever. Oh well - it's over!

A friend was sitting next to me, and it was his last exam as well. At the end, we both had these huge grins all over our faces. Good feeling - very nice.

And now, a quiz, brought to my aattention by [personal profile] thalia_seawood
HP Mary Sue Quiz )

Oh, and the lovely folks on the [profile] new_who community have informed us that the new Dr Who will be released in Australia 8/12/05. That's less than a month, people. Yay! Now all we need is for ABC to pick up Torchwood.

Random Observation of the Day - Today is Remembrance Day. Does a minute of silence count if you are in an exam?

*Yawn* The combination of boredom and tiredness is not ideal for studying. Take my word for it.

I am completely unprepared for my exam tomorrrow. I think I'm just going to hope for nice questions, with answers I can fudge. I really hate this course - mostly because of the refusal of the lecturer to post worked examples. He has no problem giving us solutions, mind you - just not anything useful. Which means I've spent hours staring at equations, wondering how on earth I can turn my numbers into his numbers.

*sigh*

Still, if all goes well, this will be my last undergraduate exam. On the other hand, given my extreme lack of knowledge and understanding of this subject, I may be back next year.

I hate exams. And I hate studying for them even more.

(And to make matters worse, the bathroom on my floor is flooded. For the second time in a week. Stupid college.)

And the procrastination continues. I bring you - Cloud: The Icon. Which is kinda like Cloud: The Musical, only much quieter. And also a lot shorter. And non-moving. So not really like it at all, except that Cloud is in both. Well, he would be, if Cloud: The Musical actually existed.

It's bright. I like bright. Kinda back-lit, or something. Hey, I'm an engineer, not an artist, OK?

You know, I liked Advent Children, especially the fancy animation, but every time I watch it I have this powerful urge to go give all the male characters haircuts. Seriously, the only reason that Sephiroth bloke is/was in such a bad mood was because the hair in his face was driving him mad. Well, that and his enemies bounce around ignoring the laws of physics (Newton? Newton who?), which would also make me damn cranky.

Ughh. It's 2:30 in the morning, and I have sooo much work to do for this exam. On the other hand, I was (moderately) successful in completing the practice questions on oxides. As long as they don't ask a question about oxide growth rates on other oxides, should be OK. For that tiny, insignificant section *sigh*. I have also concluded that I suck at reading log/log graphs.

Only 190 questions to go...

Random Observation of the Day - I really suck at studying. It's absolutely amazing I've made it this far through my degree. Just have to hope the luck holds for a little while longer...

My attempts to procrastinate have reached new heights. Today, I made my First Offical Icon. *points to icon* And when you realise that my image editing software currently consists of Microsoft Word, you can understand that I am currently feeling very accomplished. Oh, and I also have iPhoto. *thinks covetous thoughts about Photoshop*

OK, so it's cute and pointless, sue me. (Occasionally, even I like cute. In very, very small doses. Don't look at me like that.) If it makes you feel better, imagine that it is a small, cute, fluffy stalker thingy, hiding its knife/gun/lightsabre behind the bushes. And the text is too small, but apparently that is a time honoured tradition in icon making, so there :-)

But on to more in-character news from me. Top 5 Star Wars Moments )

And now I really, REALLY want to buy the DVD, but I'm being good. Also currently being broke - I have a grand total of $52 in the bank, which CANNOT be spent on any more Star Wars stuff. *sigh*

So, cheer me up, admire my icon.

Random Observation of the Day - I have spent far too much time lately on the Internet, and far too little (read: none) studying for my exam on friday. Oh, this is not going to be fun...

Warner Bros is finally thinking about releasing Pinky and the Brain on DVD. Yay! Read All About It

And Congratulations to Pharaoh for finishing his thesis. Now he can get some sleep.

In other news, I have changed the layout of this Lj. Definitely like it better this way.

I've also been rewatching my Dark Angel DVDs. Can't decide if Jessica Alba is a good actress or not. Well, I guess she suits the part, which is the main thing. And besides, who pays any attention to her when Logan is around? *drools on keyboard*

Shallowness aside, I really do like the balance they have in the first season between his story and hers. Pity that they ruined the whole thing with the second season. Is it wrong to feel midly relieved that they cancelled the show before they could do more damage?

Useless Trivia of the Day - The wonderful piece of punctuation ‽ (otherwise written as ?!) is called an Interrobang. It was introduced in 1962, by Mr Speckter (some big-wig in advertising company, which explains a lot - 'cause there just aren't enough normal pieces of punctuation for them to abuse). The Interrobang can convey in print an attitude, curiosity, and wonder. Or, used incorrectly (generally by advertising types or fanbrats), induce an attitude of fear, loathing and blind rage.

Oh, and in the 'Barry Trotter' parodies, Barry's mark is in the shape of - you guessed it - an interrobang.

(Courtesy of Pharaoh, who imparted this useless piece of information - well, the name anyway)

Interrupting the editing of a friend's thesis to bring you important breaking news - Season 3 of the Pretender is being released on the 14th February. Read all about it here

Apparently my amazing consumer powers are working after all, hey [profile] psuedoskribe?

I would be excited, but I'm just too damn tired *yawn*

Oh, and the exam today was fairly ordinary. All keep your figures crossed that I passed, 'cause at the moment, I really want out of uni.

*Stands triumphantly on top of pile of massacred assessment, yodeling 'We Are The Champions'*

Yes, folks, Lyore is officially back. Handed in my last piece of assessment this morning. Last Ever Piece of Undergraduate Assessment (excluding exams - touch wood).

Though, failing would be good from the point of view of having another year of high speed internet access and the uni network. Unfortunately, failing would be bad due to the slightly more hazardous fact that my parents would shoot me before I could use my high speed internet access. *sigh*

Hmm, Makybe Diva just won the Melbourne Cup, AKA 'The-race-that-stops-a-nation-except-for-Lyore's-semiconductor-tute' *growls*. I like watching it, even when I haven't backed anyone. AND this year I picked the winner - well, me and the rest of the country. I think I can hear the screams of anguish from the Bookies now.

Other random things which have landed in my inbox and I thought I might share
HP Flying car stolen )

You know, just cause the car couldn't be DRIVEN away...

On a more sinister note... EM mind control )

That's so wrong. What's worse is that I could kinda get behind the whole defense ideas - subduing someone temporarily is infinitely preferable to shooting them, IMO. But something which can actually control your actions? No thanks. *glares suspiciously at iPod*

Revenge of the Sith is released here tomorrow, but I will... not... buy... it... *closes eyes and thinks of Boxsets. Expensive, entire saga Boxsets* Someone grab one of those mind control thingys and steer me AWAY from the DVD stores, please.

Random Observation of the Day - In regards to the 'pick the horse with the interesting colours' system of betting, this was moderately successful - red and white checks plus the southern cross. Not too bad. You know, someone should find out if horses with two names do better in the Melbourne cup than horses with one (Makybe Diva, Phar Lap... )

EDIT - cause I was bored... )

EDIT again - to fix MDs colours and to let you all know - in NSW, people bet $59 million on the TAB alone for the Melbourne cup. Wow.

Good News!

Wow - so relieved at the moment.

After explaining the situation to my lecturer, they've said that I can use my group certificate as proof of employment for my work experience report. *heaves massive sigh of relief*

You have no idea how much less stressed I feel.

Plus, this arvo's presentation (on Bosch etching, if anyone cares) is consistently clocking in on time, so that is nice :) Still needs work, but it is passable now.

Then , when I was checking my mail, I saw the notice that Stargate SG-1 has been picked up for a 10th season! *does happy dance*
And yes, so was Atlantis - no word on BSG at the mo, but they would be crazy to cancel it, its their highest rating show.

So, all is right with both my real-life and fandom worlds.

Trying to wipe the massive grin of my face, but it's not working.

: D

:-)

;-P

Nope, still there : D
Oh well.

Oh, and if anyone is wondering, I tried ringing Mr Personnel manager again this morning. This time he'd gone into town.

Well, I have masses of work to do, so I think it's time for an update :)

Cut for insane ranting, abuse of sarcasm, and mildly threatening attitudes )

Apart from the fact that I still haven't got hold of my work experience letter, (current plans to get their attention include hiring a sky-writer and getting all my rels back home to storm the building) I'm currently stressing about the large amounts of work which must be completed in the next 4 days. Sooo Not Good. Of course, if I don't get this letter, then it doesn't matter if I pass the stupid courses anyway, cause I still won't get to graduate. FUCK.

There's a nice little thunderstorm rumbling along outside. If I had a desktop computer, this would be a perfect excuse for me to unplug the thing and take a break. *Glares at stupid battery powered laptop* At this point, getting struck by lightening is also sounding attractive.

Right. So. Going to end this here, before subjecting you all to any more of my bad temper. Sorry 'bout that.

Random Observation of the Day - So much work. So little time. Even less motivation *sigh*

Saw Pride and Prejudice earlier this evening with Bob/ette. I was fairly ambivalent about the movie going in, since the book is my literary equivalent of comfort food, and I love the BBC mini series. I was fairly ambivalent coming out, as well.

Ramblings about the movie )

Believe it or not, I did actually enjoy the movie, when I could stop comparing it to the book. As a period romance, I though it was excellent. As an adaption of Pride and Prejudice, I thought it was OK.

Now, for something completely different - I got my invitation to Graduate in the mail today. Yay! Now I just need to reply - and pass all my units this semester.

And, I bought the new Rasmus cd. Haven't had a chance to listen to it yet. Hopefully they stick mostly with the style of 'Dead Letters' rather than reverting to their earlier stuff.

Random Observation of the Day - "Married couples get more radiation from sleeping next to one another than they do from the nuclear industry" - Sir Fred Hoyle

Aggrrhh! People who forward chain letters without checking the facts should have their Internet privileges revoked for a month.

I got this email yesterday, the upshot of which was that some bloke reckoned he had a Cure For Cancer, and the medical industry was blocking it Miracle Cure For Cancer! Suppressed by EVIL capitalist pigs! Sign and Save the World from the ravages of Cancer! And SPAM EVERYONE YOU KNOW!!!!!111!!!ELEVENTYONE111! )

Being the naturally curious (and skeptical) person that I am, I did what the email suggested, and checked it out on the web. 5 minutes later, and guess what? There IS a report published by the NHMRC. You can find it here. Alternatively, there is a plain english translation (for us non-medical geeks), in the form of a press release, here

So, I decided that I should actually reply to this (well, to everyone who got the same email as me)

my actually very polite and informative reply )

I didn't even include the harsh stuff - where they analysed his patient data and totally shredded his '100% cure' delusion. Mostly because I thought they wouldn't understand it - what is this 'research' you speak of? Clinical study? Bah. We don't need no stinking study.

I also left alone all the logical and factual flaws in the letter itself, as well as the numerous unsupported claims - mostly cause I couldn't be bothered.

Before anyone says anything - I realise that the fact the study HAS been completed will not bother anyone who believes in the 'conspiracy to stop cancer cures', but at least it invalidated this particular piece of spam. You know, I can see the next one now.... NHMRC study on CURE FOR CANCER coverup by global american corporations!!!1!! Sign petition for new, unbiased survey conducted by TRUE BELIEVERS ONLY!!!!!1!!1

Just don't send it to me. Or do, so I can laugh (or possibly bang my head against a brick wall)

So please, if you are going to send me spam, even well-intentioned spam, then at least make sure it is WELL RESEARCHED spam. Up-to-date well-researched spam would be even nicer. And I would also like a pony and a toy rocket.

OK, now I feel better. Still worried about the stupidity of the human race, but better.

Random Observation for the Day - how the hell can supposedly intelligent people sign these things? I mean, really, com'mon people. *sigh*

Birthday!

Generally, I'm not to keen on birthdays - either something goes wrong, or someone is in a really feral mood, or some other disaster occurs. But, for once, this one went of without a hitch (apart from the rampant hayfever - but I'm pretty much immune, so that didn't bother me too much :)).

Of course, most importantly - I GOT MY IPOD!! :) I call him Menhir. So very shiny. And a promise of the first season Battlestar Gallatica boxset from Bob/ette and the Other Sister, once we return to civilisation. (Civilisation being defined as towns with more than one dedicated DVD shop).

For anyone who wants to hear about the rest of my day, here's Lyore's version of A Day At The Races )

Hmm... one of the new down lights in my room is flickering. A lot. Like some weird EM alien is trying to communicate using their version of morse code. Alternatively, it could be overheating, but I thought that they were supposed to turn off when they do that? Of course, given the electrician managed to put a hole in my ceiling in the wrong spot, before putting his foot through the ceiling in my parent's room, anything is possible. As long as it doesn't burst into flames, I guess.

Random Observation of the Day - iPod's are seriously cool. Very, very nice, and even nicer when they belong to you.

Serenity No. 1 in the UK )

The UK browncoats have been saying they were going to ride to the rescue of the BDM - nice to see they came through! Go the Pommies! It feels strangely wrong to be cheering for them, but I'll forgive them the ashes if they get this movie a sequel!

Yay! Got the DVDs (Pretender and Hogan's Heroes, season 2) from amazon today. Only two weeks before they said it would show up - I thought that a month for delivery, even from America to Australia, was a little pessimistic. Unless they were planning to swim it over.

Of course, since I checked my mail just before I had to go to class (you know, cause I only got up just before I had to go to class), I then had to sit through two ultra boring hours of basic quantum mechanics, when all I really wanted to be doing was checking out my newest acquisitions. Now, it's fairly well known that I have issues with QM at the best of times, but this was stuff even I understood - whats more, I understood it the first time round. There are definitely drawbacks to doing a combined degree.

Still, it was eventually over, and I got to retire to the wonders of Mr Lyle and Brigitte, and a bunch of really dumb germans. Good times were had by all (OK, by me, but that's all that counts). Minor annoyance - the Pretender DVDs are still double sided, which is just a pain - mostly cause I can never figure out which way I should be putting up. Oh well, there's only two choices, so I guess I'll manage to cope :)

I even made some progress filling out the job-related paperwork - just waiting on a few minor details and the delivery of some documents, and I may be able to finally remove the Leaning Tower of security forms from my desk.

All in all, a good day.

Random Observation of the Day - Whoever (Whomever?) draws up these forms definitely has some sort of supernatural ability. They predicted the exact amount of space I needed to answer each question, and then they halved it.

Warning - Rabid Physics Geekiness Ahead. Read At Your Own Risk.

Due to one of my lecturers being completely slack and unable to organise any actual labs to take place in our laboratory slot, I had to go on a tour of the Dept of Electronic Materials Engineering (over in the research school) today. Which would have been fine, if I hadn't already done it four times. It's getting to the stage I could run the damn tour myself. *sigh*

Bring on the geekiness... )

Moronic question of the day - When looking at a prototype testing chamber for plasma thrusters (you know, to use for space ships), a girl asked 'so, isn't it a little small? I mean, wouldn't you need like hundreds of these to push a space ship?" Well, yes moron, this is why this is PROOF OF CONCEPT only... I mean, nice as it would be to build a full-scale plasma engine before they even know if this type works properly, it may get a tad expensive. Thinking back, she was annoying through the whole thing... I think some people just can't help it.

Random Observation of the Day - Sometimes, my geekiness astounds even me...
lyore: (Default)
Messing about on the computer, with the TV running beside me. Is anyone else amused by the ad war going on between Duracell and Energiser? The ones where the duracell bunny and energiser battery-man compete, supposedly as some sort of comparison of their ability to perform in cameras, or walkmans, or whatever. If it's an Energiser ad, the battery-man wins, and if it is a Duracell one, the bunny kicks his arse. Seriously, this is approaching the level of an Ian Thorpe/Micheal Phelps competition.

On the subject of ads, I do like the Carlton Draught one, with the 'o furtuna' music and the subtitles - damn funny.

Onto DVD news ...

Since people were asking - Serenity DVD release )

For something completely different - SeaQuest DSV on DVD

Not DVD, but I read somewhere that apparently there are episodes of Now and Again available for download on the net, on something called 'emule'. Must go hunting.

Random Observation of the Day - Exactly one more month of uni (last exam on 11th Nov). I would be excited, but I'm to busy curling up in the corner shaking with terror.
lyore: (Default)
Had a nap - so much more awake now. Which may be a problem, since its almost 11:30. Oh well.

Since I have quite a few things feel like saying at the moment, and some of them are quiet spoilery, I figured I would get adventurous and try lj-cuts.

Cut the first - Serenity Australian Box Office )

I've been lurking about a lot of Serenity/Firefly boards this past week, and I'm suprised at the backlash that Joss is getting from some fans about some of the events in the movie. Which prompted me to write this rant... Here be spoilers )

Oh, and Bob/ette sent me some Joss Whedon interviews today. Very cool (even if one of them was named 'Joss Wheaton' - Mmm, Joss, the amazing chocolate Wheaton LOL) One of them had 'We attack the major with homus' line, which is one of my all time faves. *big grin*
