I don't like the adaptive ads on gmail. I guess I don't like them more or less than any other types of unsolicited internet advertising, but sometimes, when you aren't paying attention, it can be damn freaky to check your mail after having an online conversation with someone and find the sidebar full of ads mentioning the keywords you were just discussing. And yes, after a moment you work out its because this was an lj conversation and so the comments got mailed to your inbox, but for a few seconds you're like 'WTF?'

Anyway. On another random note, when I was aimlessly browsing through forums at work, I noticed that people had degenerated into trading 'Chuck Norris' comments. Can anyone tell me the evolution of these things? I mean... why Chuck Norris, of all people? Some highlights under the cut, before it degenerated into a list of things that he could destroy with a well-placed roundhouse kick )

There was also a Mr T sideline, which seemed to revolved around how many fools he could pity in a given time, and what would happen in a Chuck Norris/Mr T showdown. Some people have way to much time on their hands at work :)

In an attempt to fulfil this month's goal of being more motivated, I bought an exercise bike today. This particular one was chosen partly on the basis of the salesperson's assurances that it was easy to assemble (and partly because the cheaper one was sold out). HAH.

After bringing the home the box and dragging it up the stairs (which by itself probably fulfilled my exercise quota for the next month), [profile] bob_ette and I opened it up and started assembling. Over an hour later, we have one functioning exercise bike - however, we also have 4 left over screws, and the console/computer screen section of said bike is currently being held on by a section of packaging wrapped around the face and the upright. It looks like an 80's aerobic instructor. *sigh*

And yes, we did follow the instructions, dammit!

Five things I've learned in the last few days:

1. Wireless Broadband is goodness, but when the salespeople say the set-up assistant will work on a mac, they're probably lying.
2. Pluto is no longer a planet. Huh.
3. Canberra is too small to put anything you don't want RL people to see on the internet. Especially if it involves pictures.
4. Compared to some of my friends, I've had a very boring life.
5. The best lines to say after sucking helium out of balloons are 'Luke, I am your father', and 'There can only be One'. Although, V's introductory speech from V for Vendetta isn't bad either.

All in all, Life is good :)

Well, I guess everyone has heard the news by now, but some RL friend asked for links, so here they are:

http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/index.php?category=2&id=37607

http://www.gateworld.net/news/2006/08/cooper_isg-1i_will_go_on.shtml

I'm sad, but not surprised. I thought season 10 was just breath life back into the franchise (ratings not withstanding), so of course it's been cancelled. :(

I guess I'd be less bitter if Atlantis wasn't on - I understand the difference in expense of the two shows, but I just don't like Atlantis. (Although, this way Sam and Daniel can go help the other scientists storm Atlantis when the geeks take over and throw out all the non-scientists...)

I'm just waiting for all the campaigns - should be interesting, although I am not getting my hopes up.

Wow - has it really been that long since I updated this thing? *slaps wrist* Bad Lyore.

Quite a bit has been happening since I last updated - primarily, changing rotations at work. My new job looks like it will be a lot better than my old one - so far I still haven't been given any work (I'm at the reading and trying to catch up with the project stage), but at least the place has technical work which is vaguely in my area of expertise. Oh, and on my first day there I got offered another job. I'm don't think I'm going to take it, but it is nice to be wanted :)

Also work related, one of the other reasons for my absence was the dreaded 'Graduate Familarisation Tour', otherwise affectionately known as 'Grad Camp'. We all survived, but I think the highlight of the tour was playing Star Wars Trivial pursuit on the bus. [profile] cloverfizz and I emerged the undisputed victors, and earned the title of 2006's Geekiest Grads. Meh - It's a fair cop.

On-line wise, I've been trying to catch up with people's posts and comments, but forgive me if I've missed something. I've also been distracted by the ongoing shenanigans of the bad penny folks. Ah, those crazy HP BNFs...

I'm also now three episodes behind on Stargate, which I intend to remedy as soon as possible. After all, 200 should be this friday's ep, and from what I've been hearing, I'll need to see that one ASAP, so I can understand what is going on when the fandom implodes.

You know, I had a lot more I wanted to say - two weeks worth of ramblings, at least - but now my mind has gone blank. How odd.

Made another Superman Returns wallpaper tonight, in between cleaning the house. This time: Lois Lane.

1024x768 thumbnail under the cut )

Oh, and because [profile] bob_ette asked, I've got 1024x768 version of the other two, which I will add to the last post.

And now I really, really should go to bed.
lyore: (Default)
So, since [profile] bob_ette has been stealing the internet, I've been spending some quality time on photoshop. And I have two Superman Returns wallpapers (well, one Superman and one Clark Kent) for you. Thumbnails under the cut. )

ETA: Here are the 1024x768 version, since I was asked for them )

Apart from that - looks like the headphone jack on my computer has died, and I'm not sure what to do about it, short of taking the whole thing back to the shop. At the moment, I'm hoping that if I ignore it, it will fix itself.

On the work front: Met my new supervisor today, and things are looking good for the next rotation. The work looks infinitely more challenging (which may not be a good thing...) and far more up my alley, the people seem nice, and looks like I might get to do some serious training and professional development. Fingers crossed, anyway.

Err - so, my mood icon - does it disturb anyone else? Or is it just me?

Title:The Browncoat
Author: [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]
Pairing: None, this is pure, unadulterated gen-fic. Team-centric.
Rating: G
Disclaimer: Not mine.
Summary: SG-1 go see Serenity at the movies. Much discussion ensues, and Daniel discovers something about Teal’c – and Sam - he didn’t know. (Featuring: FTL101, Our Technology is Better than Your Technology, and How to Piss Off Your 2IC in Three Easy Steps.)
Notes: A massive thank you to [profile] redbyrd_sgfic for beta-ing this for me – it improved out of sight because of your input. Of course, then I went through and changed things, so any mistakes which remain are totally my fault. Also, thanks to [profile] bob_ette for doing a final read-through. Feedback would be marvelous, and concrit is even better.
Notes 2: OK, technically, Serenity was released in late 05, which would make it Season 8 of SG-1. For the purposes of this story, I’ve moved the release date of Firefly and Serenity up a few years, so the action in this story is set around early season four-ish.

Thoughts on Morpheus, Vala, Mitchell, and the introduction of new characters in SG-1 )

Still on a Stargate note, what do people think about the possible continuation of the movie-verse? It would be interesting to see where they went with it, especially as Devlin has said he didn't want to invalidate any of the SG-1 storylines.
lyore: (Default)
OK, so I'm back. Business trip went very well - got to see (and touch!) cool toys, even the boring meeting wasn't too boring (just very long) and I didn't actually kill my boss, even though he was incredibly annoying, to the point to being embarrassing, for the entire trip. Unfortunately, I didn't get any time to work on that fic, but that's OK since I think I finished most of the editing last night. I just want to do a final read-through before I post it, so baring me finding any glaring errors, it should go up today.

On the topic off Stargate, I finally got the newest episode. Off to watch that once I finish updating this, so you may end up with yet another post from me about that. I apologise in advance if I end up spamming your flist. Of course, me being able to spam you depends on me successfully defending my internet connection from [profile] bob_ette. We'll see how that goes.

Completely random note - I put this very nice (and a tad expensive) bracelet on layby a few weeks ago, and I got it out today. It's so very pretty *hugs bracelet*. If I had a digital camera I'd be tempted to take pictures, but I don't so people will just have to use their imaginations :)

And contrary to what certain people have said, I DO NOT have a grey hair anymore
lyore: (Default)
This is a drive-by update to say I won't be around for the next few days, since I get to go on a business trip to Queensland. Yay for the job - I had to buy a suitcase and everything, that should tell you how often I get to travel. I'm a bit nervous about the flights - not because I have any particular fear of flying, just because I get uncomfortable doing things I don't do often. And I still have to pack :(

Anyway, I shall be away from the internet AND the computer for a few days, but this could be a good thing. I intend to use the free time (if I have any) to edit that SG-1 fic I mentioned, and possibly even get started on the fic-a-thon entry I'm supposed to be writing. We'll see how it goes.

ETA: You know what the world really needs? More specifically, you know what I really need? A cordless iron. I hate ironing at the best of times, and I hate it even more when I managed to keep wrapping the sleeves of my shirts around the cord. Argh.
lyore: (Default)
Well, my computer finally came through for me and I got to see Stargate. Beam me up, Odyssey )

I hate the ATO. No, really. How complicated do they need to make these things! (ATO is the Australian Tax Office, for those non-aussies out there. And I still haven't got to see the new Stargate. Grrr.

More Bulwer-Lytton stuff - with a SW twist )

Oh, and [profile] cloverfizz has a whole bunch of lovely PotC icons on her lj (points at icon). Somehow, they make me like the movie more...

I want my Stargate! I want it now! *Pokes Bittorrent*

Hogan's Heroes not a realistic view of POWs, says Federal Minister No, really? I thought all POWs had a sauna under the camp, ate 3 course meals and wandered in and out while blowing up railways/bridges/big-arse guns.

Personally, I think NASA should base their budget on I Dream of Jeanie reruns. *headdesk*

Oh, here's the winners of the Bulwer-Lytton Prize. I personally like the runner up )

Big shout-out to all those graduating - Congratulations, [profile] kasneeze, [personal profile] necromage and [profile] auril! I shall have to make plans to induct you into the super-seckret Graduate Club!

I just got back from seeing Superman Returns for the second time. Have I mentioned I love this movie, even with it's monumentally stupid Evil Plot? Obviously, Lex Luthor got slipped some dumb pills in prison, but I will forgive Singer that, and the other Gratuitous Abuses of Physics which occur in this movie. Luckily for you all, I've indulged my need to rant about that to RL friends, so you are all spared from listening to me vent. Also, $5 movie tickets = love.

Anyway, recent conversations about this movie with various friends have got me thinking about the different incarnations of Superman/Clark Kent. I have a whole lot of meta-ish thoughts boiling round in my head, but unfortunately they are going to have to wait until I am awake enough (and have enough time) to write them down. Hmmm. Wonder what my boss would say if he spotted me doing it at work?
lyore: (Default)
Hmm. In honour of what will probably be our last game in the world cup, I bring you one of the most disturbing images ever seen. In a motion-sick kinda way - get your minds out of the gutter! )

All I've been doing in the last few days is watching various TV shows. Saw the first few episodes of Andromeda - reserving judgement for now, but it looks like it could be fun. It would be better if Iolaus was there too Also watched the first 50 episodes of Bleach - not bad, but I'm sort of over the whole no-plot-progression thing. Fighting is good, plot is better. It's like watching Home and Away - you can miss 10 episodes, and yet still pick it up where you left off. Still, it's pretty addictive (and [personal profile] necromage if you see this before tomorrow, can I get some more off you?)

Right now I am catching up on my Dr Who viewing. I'm watching Impossible Planet right now, but so far, it isn't really grabbing me. Maybe it needs more big-arse swords and fighting Plus, the bad guy looks like Moloch from BtVS, which is rather distracting. I keep wanting to call the Devil Malcolm :)

OMG Soccer

We drew. Which means are through. My God.

*stunned silence*

Soooo going to be late for work *races off to get ready*

ETA - Someone is setting off fireworks. Yeah, I think people are happy.

Saw Cars tonight. It was ... enjoyable. Apart from that, I'm not completely sure about my opinion of it, it just seemed off in a few places, but I freely admit that I was not in the right mood to really appreciate it. Actually, I think my biggest dislike was the girlfriend - I spent the entire movie feeling like she'd been transplanted from any one of 2567 other movies, there was nothing individual about her. But I loved the 'car-ified' scenes running over the credits. And the mechanic/pit crew cars were cute.

Fandom-wise, the MsScribe saga is up and (mostly) complete. I'm surprised by the amount of class that everyone is showing about this, since it had the potential to get wankier than than anything else I've ever seen. Politeness (and apologies) abounds on all sides. I haven't paid so much attention to the HP fandom in a long time, it's interesting to see who's still around and who's not, as well as watching people's reactions.

It looks like Stargate Season 9 is actually going to be shown in Australia sometime in the next few months. They may even get started before the DVDs come out :) Apparently, Atlantis isn't scheduled yet.

Also - work sucks.
lyore: (Default)
Well, I was watching an episode of Smallville, and Paul McGillion (otherwise known as Dr Carson Beckett) had a minor (as in very minor - about 2 minutes of screen time and a few muttered apologies) role, complete with accent. This is cool, but not particularly noteworthy. Until you get further into the show, and realise that one of the baddies in the same episode is non other than Major Paul Davies himself. With very... interesting hairstyle.

I have a theory - and pictures! See the pretty pictures... )

See? Everything Fits. Seriously.
lyore: (Default)
I've just spent an absolutely fascinating hour or so reading through the msscribe saga over on bad_penny (journalfen account). For those of you who haven't spent anytime in the HP fandom, it's probably of very limited interest (except for the sheer WTF?ry, and master use of sock puppets).

Although, the background should be recommended reading for anyone trying to understand the state of the HP fandom, both currently and historically, especially the situation surrounding the formation of most of the major HP archives. I used to lurk back on the lists (including HP4GU) when all this was going on, and it's interesting to see the whole picture. (Yes, [profile] cloverfizz, HP was my first fandom. Don't hate me too much.)

Ah, the Good Old Days. Back when BNF meant BNF (Cassie Clare, anyone?), none of the major sites talked to the others (well, not unless restraining orders were involved ^_^), and sockpuppets ruled the earth (hey, who needs anonymous memes when you have a sockpuppet, hey?). In fact, it makes the current 'hate meme" wank look tiny in comparison.

Speaking of Hate Memes, a few of the commenters have mentioned that they think this shit is responsible for a lot of the general hatred and BNF-hate that's still around today. I think they're probably right - some of this shit was seriously nasty. When I think about it, this stuff is probably one of the main reasons it took me over 5 years to stop lurking in fandom, and start actively contributing. And when I did, you can be sure it wasn't in any HP areas.

HP fandom. What can you say?
