Waiting...

When you see this post, quote from Doctor Who on your LJ.

Well, who can go past the Ninth Doctor's first line?

*grabs Rose's hand*
Doctor: Run!

Or what about:

Jack: Who looks at a screwdriver and thinks, 'Ooo, this could be a little more sonic?'
The Doctor: What, you've never been bored? Never had a long night? Never had a lot of cabinets to put up?

Yeah, even though I'm impatiently waiting to see last night's episode, I feel like quoting Nine. Perhaps because if I think about anything even remotely connected to the finale, my brain might explode before I get a chance to see it.

I want to watch it now, damnit!

I think the lifts at work are haunted. They are always about 5 degrees* colder than the rest of the building, will randomly bump and shudder, and the screen that displays the floor number will flicker on and off.

Definitely haunted. I'm expecting Sam and Dean to show up and save the day any time now.

*that's Celsius, btw.

WTF?

WTF, LJ? My layout just disappeared. What's going on?

ETA: Still not sure what caused the spontaneous disappearing act, but today it's back.

All I can say is OMG. Wow. I think I have completely fallen in love with the Master - Evil hasn't look this fun since... well, ever.

And I think I almost went into cardiac arrest at the multiple billowing coats shots... *dies*

Also - a couple of points )

It's really nice to be breathlessly waiting for the next episode of a show. I haven't felt this way for a while - I'd almost forgotten the mix of anticipation and frustration you get with a good cliffhanger.

On SG-1: All old, new and lapsed SG-1 fen should check out [personal profile] katie_m's Quotedumps. A wonderful, laugh-out-loud trip down memory lane, courtesy of the sardonic wit of the SG-1 fans themselves.
lyore: (Default)
Didn't think I'd let this pass without comment did you?

It's odd that it's over, after so long. While I am not totally devastated by the show's ending, I still got chills watching the start of the credits.

Spoilers for 'Unending' )

That's it, I guess - apart from the movies, and the fanfic, and the discussions... so not over at all, really :)

*Yawn*

Apparently 6 day weeks with 12 hour days makes [personal profile] lyore a tired little engineer. At least when I try and keep up some pretense of a social life at the same time. And it looks like I'm working this Sunday too...

Quick RL update )

On the Perm account sale: Am rather bemused by [profile] barakb25's comments here:

No content that is created to plan, encourage, or advocate hate crimes, the abuse of children, or rape.

Right. So content created to 'plan encourage or advocate' murder, war crimes, or terrorism is AOK then? Glad that's clear.

Sometimes I think LJ need to have a serious think before they post policy decisions, because it's bloody obvious to anyone with half a brain this is going to come back and bite them.

OK, so tired. Shower, then bed. Zzzz

Feedback is welcome, concrit is even better.
Summary: Even the longest of lives is made up of a series of moments... Five intersections in space and time where Jack and the Doctor parted, and the one time they didn't.

The stars have aligned, the inspiration has struck, and I've actually found some time. Yes, folks, I've actually written some fic! You can all blame the goodness of that conversation in the latest episode of Doctor Who

So, I'm looking for a beta - New!Who-verse, slight spoilers up to the most recent episode. 5 things fic, Jack and Doctor-centric, could possibly be read as slash if you really, really squinted. Nice and short, approx 1200 words.

Any takers?

Bueller?

Gah. Haven't got my Captain Jack icon uploaded - guess I'll have to make do with my emo!Dalek, instead.

Looks like the Zombie invasion has been confined to the US and Europe, at least for the time being.

I suspect this is because no self-respecting zombie wants to spend that much time on a plane. It's bad enough when you are alive, I can't imagine what it's like when rigour mortis starts to set in.

If they ever do make it to Australia, I'm not that worried - it's hard to lurch at a decent speed when your body is contorted like a right-angled pretzel. I certainly doubt they could manage the stairs to my apartment.

Still. Perhaps I'll go out and hunt up Shaun of the Dead Zombie killing instructions, just in case. Better safe than sorry, after all.

confused? And yeah, we're a little bit behind in Australia...

Squeezed in a little writing time today, around work and other things. Only about half an hour, but at least it's something. Trying to get the motivation and time to write to line up together has been an exercise in futility for the longest time, so I'll take what I can get, even if it does happen when I really should be getting reading for bed, and I have to stop because I really do have to get up the next morning and go to work. And Darth Vader and Han Solo are still trapped in the turbolift, but at least they are threatening each other talking. This is a start.

Anyway, this got me thinking about Han Solo's character, and how he's changed/not changed through the saga. And since I know my flist are all intelligent and discerning people, who understand that Han Shot First, I have a question for you all.

Would Han still have shot first, if the Greedo scene had occurred at some other time in the Saga? Would he still have shot first if it had happened between A New Hope and Empire, for instance, or just after Jedi? 10 years after Jedi? At what stage (if ever), would the respectible-isation of Han Solo stopped him from shooting first? We all know that he'd still shoot last, but would the changes in his values (the reaffirmation of the value of friendships, standing up for your beliefs, true love, all that jazz), change his instinctive response to the situation?

Feel free to include or ignore the EU in your responses - whatever floats your boat. I'm just interested in other people's thoughts.

And now I really, really need to go to bed.

Just a quick update, because while long weekends rock, working 12 hours a day doesn't.

Things will probably be a little quiet here for a while, due to the aforementioned 12 hour days (and Sundays - did I mention I was working Sundays as well?), until things settle down at the project. And, as usual when I'm just trying to stay caught up with LJ, posting and commenting is the first thing to go.

Hopefully it will only be for a couple of weeks, perhaps less, if I can convince the my guys to stop distracting me by telling war stories. I think I spent more time today listening to stories than I did actually doing work, which is not great from the point of view of the looming deadlines of DOOOM, but is a hell of a lot more interesting. (Turns out Australia nearly had a military coup in the Seventies. Who knew?) Still, if they are going to pay me double-time, I better at least pretend to be doing work.

Phantom!

Jun. 6th, 2007 11:18 pm
lyore: (Default)
Wohoo! Got tickets to see Phantom of the Opera in Melbourne in December! It's later in the year than we were planning to go (Yes, this is Australia. Yes, these things do sell out 4 months in advance. Yes, we did have to get a special deal just to get tickets), and all my RL friends who said they were going to come piked, but me and [profile] bob_ette and The Other Sister are all going, and it Shall Be Good. Anthony Warlow is the Phantom, we have good seats (front row of the dress circle), and a package deal with an 'Exclusive Phantom of the Opera merchandise pack including souvenir items, program, and chocolate Phantom mask in a souvenir Phantom carry bag."

'Cause, yeah. Everyone needs a Phantom of the Opera mask made out of chocolate.

And no, we did not get this particular package just to get the chocolate mask.

I swear.

Oh, and if I'm quiet on the posting/commenting front for the next few days, it's because I'm currently getting shooting pains through my fingers when I'm typing. Since I spend most of my time at work typing, this is a problem, and I'm trying to cut back a little for a few days. Plus, I'm going home for the long weekend, and as I have complained many times, the internet access back home is ... limited. So chances are I'm reading, just not talking much for the rest of the week.

A few completely unrelated notes:

1) For those of you who haven't seen [profile] tkp's Pictorial Log of the wait for 6A/LJ's explanation, I suggest you check it out. It's a compilation of icons/banners/macros and images posted on the [site community profile] dw_news thread during the Great Wait, and it's a wonderful insight into the collective fannish brain. Oh, and did I mention it's funny?

2) For those of you interested in Gender in fandom, Henry Jenkin's blog has the first of a series of gender and fan studies conversations. A side conversation can be found here. I haven't had time to really check these discussions out, but they promise to be interesting.

3) I never mentioned that my Royal Guard helmet arrived, did I? Well, it did, and it is cool.

4) Finally got around to watching West Wing. I'm enjoying it, but I'm not sure if I could ever get really fannish about the show - my lack of knowledge of US politics means I'm left inferring a lot of things from the context, and it lacks the 'epicness' normally required to really suck me in.
ETA ARRGHH! Cliffhangers!

But I still have the urge to read some West Wing/Invisible Man or West Wing/Stargate SG-1 crossovers. C'mon people, rec me up! :)

I pity the young generation growing up on her books with a sad and skewed notion of morals and grammar through the broken glasses of The Boy Who Lived.

This essay/post is partly inspired by the above quote (unattributed on purpose, since I don't want her getting attacked by passing HP fen *g*), but mostly it’s in reaction to anti-HP comments I’m seeing a lot, in RL and in Fandom. Despite the title of this post, this isn't really a defence of HP, but more an examination of why I think the books are as problematic as they are.

When you're reading this, please insert IMO as needed. Other people's thoughts may vary - that's fine. In fact, I encourage you to tell me, since I spent far too long thinking/typing this up, and am interested in what people think.

With all that out of the way, let's get into it: The Harry Potter books are a classic combination wish-forfillment and old-style boarding school fiction with an epic twist. And for a kid, that isn't a bad combination, but from an adult's perspective, it's problematic. )

Thoughts?

LJ issues a statement

Well, took 'em long enough, but looks like our journals are going back up. They better, or there'll be hell to pay.

At least they are admitting they made a mistake.

ETA: Reading through the comments to the post, I'm starting to feel sympathy and a tiny bit of admiration for [profile] barakb25. None of it excuses the complete lack of communication (not to mention the absolute fuck-up in the first place), but he sounds sincere, apologetic, and dignified in his statements. (Chris Williams, start taking notes - this is how you apologise!) Of course, I retain the right to withdraw this comment if the communities and journals don't get back up in the next couple of days :)

Sheesh. Between this and the continuing FanLib thing, I'm getting seriously overloaded on the Fandom drama. One things for sure - I was considering trying to get a permanent account when they go on sale, but there's not a chance in hell of me doing that now.

For some reason, I'm still more upset/annoyed about FanLib (not that I'm NOT bloody pissed about this), but I think that's mostly because it has the potential to follow fandom wherever it's hosted. At least LJ arbitrarily deleting accounts without investigation, as bloody insane infuriating as it is, can be countered moving. And I seriously doubt LJ will keep this up once WfI and their friends get bored, declare 'victory' and find a new target.

So, to make up for the crappiness of the news hitting LJ today, I shall share this rather amusing YouTube video
I stumbled across last night. Star Wars - The Empire Brokeback.

Oh, and a nice, rational post by profic author Elizabeth Moon Bear on fanfic. I have some of Elizabeth Moon books, been meaning to get some more. This just encouraged me to move her books to the top of my list.

Enjoy - and then go check your Interests, just to be safe.

Edited to fix my bloody stupid mistake. *Sigh* It's been one of those days.

Media Rights Technologies is suing Microsoft, Apple, Adobe, and Real Networks for not using its DRM technology

Interesting... Perhaps these guys went to the same marketing school as FanLib? I can't see MS, Apple or anyone else running out to use their products after this.

And since I'm feeling linky - here's more Star Wars goodness happening at Celebration IV. *Sigh* I'm so jealous of those of you on my flist who actually got to go.

Just got back from seeing POTC: At World's End. All I can say is... Wow. While it isn't a perfect film by any means, it totally redeemed the steaming pile of nothing that was Dead Man's Chest. This was a worthy successor to the first film - filled with insane chaos, betrayal, uncertain loyalties, triple-and-quadruple crossing, action sequences that served the plot instead of the other way around, and most of all, it was fun.

I think I shall have more thinky-thoughts later, especially about Elizabeth, who I think is one of the most interesting female characters in a long time. But sleep first.

Definitely one to watch again - I might even borrow the second movie and rewatch it in the light of this. Hey, it might improve.

Well, I couldn't let this day pass without comment, could I?

A couple of Star Wars flavoured links for you:

Death Star Convention Centre. Hopefully their Death Star survives longer than the first two...

Star Wars Fan charged with possessing an unregistered firearm How can a replica of Han Solo's Blaster be an unregistered firearm? It doesn't even fire!

Non-Star Wars related, but a complete classic anyway - [personal profile] carmarthen's The Trouble with Mad Scientists. Cause it's James Bond vs Velociraptors, and we all need more of that!

And LJ? If you eat this post, any more of my comments, or refuse to load other pages, I'll have [profile] carmathen set her velociraptors on you. Seriously. CUT IT OUT.
lyore: (Default)
I was reading my way through [community profile] metafandom, and I came across a couple of people honestly enquiring how what FanLib was doing was any different to FFN, giving that both are funded by advertisements. I wrote up a nice, long comment, and then LJ ate it and crashed Safari. So I've lost not only the comment, but who I was replying to in the first place.

But, since writing it out helped me to get my thoughts in order, I thought I might revisit it here.

The difference that fans are reacting to is, in my mind, the matter of a) intent, and b) appearance, and c) risk )

I'm not a big fan of FFN, but I think to equate the two is to miss some very fundamental issues that get to the heart of the whole FanLib debate.

ETA Relevant Blog post by profic author here " I’m willing to look the other way for fans, who are just enjoying themselves and not bothering to try to do anything other than have fun. I’m less inclined to look the other way when someone is trying to build a business a) off my fans without compensating them; b) off of my universe and characters without compensating me."

Yeah, what he said.
